Default windows98se-IE will not connect to server

This is strange. IE doesn't connect and neither does Opera.
But netscape 7.1 works fine. I believe it has to do with
the fact that the dial up connection wants to use a proxy
server. I wnet into internet conennects settings and
unchecked the proxy server box, clicked ok,etc and closed
everthing to restart but on restart the changes didn't take
effect. What gives? I checked all the other stuff like
wsock.dll and there is only one version so I don't think
that's the problem. Besides the other browsers were
working fine a couple of weeks ago. Any suggestions?

try going to www.lavasoft.de download the free version of adaware and
install it update the reference file and run to check for spyware.
Spyware can cause the problem you are mentioning.
