Default "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Unknown"

I have a ME machine which had a virus but has been
cleaned. I have run both spyware and Adaware and cleaned
the machine as well. Now the Internet expolere reponds
with "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module
Unknown" when attepted to be opened.

Have run IEradicator and removed IE reloaded it with no
change. ran Norton utilities no help. The machine seems
fine and has a ton of software installed on it. I thought
I would try to reload ME but from what I have read that
will not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try the following and see if it helps:

Windows Millenium Edition (Me)

In Windows Millennium, use an Emergency Boot Disk to boot the computer to
MSDOS mode Without CDROM Support. For more information about how to create
an Emergency Boot Disk, click the article numbers below to view the articles
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
267287 How to Create a Startup Disk in Windows Me

271823 How To Create a Windows Me Startup Disk Manually

At the A:\ Prompt, type Ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old, and then press
ENTER.
Restart the computer.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

renamed the explorer.exe file to .old and rebooted. The
system comes up fine but can not load IE. I receive the
same error "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module
Unknown" Explorer will now close. I hit okay and the

system is fine stable and it appears that I can run any
other program . Thanks for your help on this. Any other
thoughts?

A couple.....one is that Norton does not work well with ME, it has been
known to cause a good number of problems. Most any of the regulars here
will tell you that running Norton on ME is sort of asking for problems of
the unusual and sometimes, unsolvable kind. Also, this kind of error is
hard to troubleshoot because it is rather vague in just where the problem is
coming from, what is causing it. Thus, it makes it harder to find a
solution.

A couple of things that come to mind is 1) in what manner did you reinstall
IE,
IE Install/Uninstall
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

and.. 2) if you have applied all the necessary updates after reinstalling
it.

First, go here and click on the Start scan and see what updates are not
installed and install them one at a time. DO NOT install them all at once.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Second, a program called Belarc, which will scan your system and determine
which updates have actually been properly installed:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

This will make sure all updates have been properly installed.

Also............

It is possible you have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your
system that can cause this problem. In addition to running your updated
anti-virus program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are
present on your system. Follow all instructions carefully:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

to 6.01 using the update cd. I am still getting the two
errors with unknown. Any additional ideas? Ran Adaawre and
spybot. I tried uninstalling Norton after I removed IE and
it told me thet it needed it. I will try to remove it
first and and remove IE. As far as the updates I have a
Feb. Security CD from Microsoft. I am using that sine I do
not have IE working on the ME machine. I have not tried
installing Netscape as another option. I ran the hijack
log, where should I post it?

Sometimes these things can be very stubborn.....and once they get control of
your system it is often difficult to get rid of them, as you can see. But,
hang tight, we'll get you back up and running. :-)

Below is the information for posting your HiJackThis log. You must

Spyware and Hijackware Removal Support, he

http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-b...ST;f=27;t=6949

Aumha HiJackThis forums he
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

You will need to register at all of them to open a new thread to post you
log. It is free,
and no one will Spam you, it is one of many that provides this service. Once
registered, go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to
open. Then start a new post and post your log. The experts there will
analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at least a few
hours or a days' time for a response, depending on when you post the log.

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer

HJT Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=42

in addition.........

If you can, it might help if you did install the Netscape at least until you
have IE up and running properly, that way you can have access to the sites
necessary to fully clean your system.

1. Do the following so that we might have an idea of what we are dealing
with,
Make sure you have 3rd party extensions revealed. This should allow you
to see what is on your system.

Tools Internet Options Advanced Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

3. HOW TO Enable Hidden Files
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339

4. Go here and do this if you can, report back what it says.

DO YOU HAVE PARASITES? Screen for Adware, Spyware, Scumware, Dialers,
HiJackers and other unsolicited commercial software
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm

Run the AdAware, SypBot and CWShredder in Safe Mode.

HOW TO Restart in Safe Mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406

5. Try to install and run this: Run in Safe Mode too.

McAfee Avert Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

or this one will run from the DOS mode from your hard drive, so it might
work:

F-Prot - Home Use - Free
http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/win/

However, if you can't install them right now, that's alright.

Also........

Below are some instructions for how to safely uninstall Norton. Because it
is rooted deep into your system registry, and about every nook and cranny of
your system, it makes your system act like a drug addict and it thinks it
can't live with out Norton. Please read and follow all directions very
carefully.

Norton Install/Uninstall

Follow the detailed "Removal Instructions", located near the bottom of this
Symantec page: :
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...kdefender.html
Norton products are notoriously difficult to uninstall cleanly but the steps
outlined here should do it this time.

or.........

Here is a program that will help you uninstall Norton from your system.
This program should help you get rid of all traces of it so that it won't
keep nagging at you that it 'needs' it. Read and follow all directions here
carefully.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...2?OpenDocument
or
http://snipurl.com/90lo

Please report back the results here, and the exact wording of any error
messages you may get. Often the wording of the error can give us a good
clue on what is causing the problem.

Thank you for your patience. :-)

Hope this helps
