Hi,

I have been using FF (FireFox) 2.0.0.20 for some time, but I got
tired of the "Stop Scrip" hassle.

I installed KernelEx 4.5.2 on one of my Win98 laptops and
I installed FF 3.6 on that laptop a couple years ago. I don't remember if
there was a "glitch" with that version of FF, but later I downloaded FF 4.0.1.
This version does have a "glitch". The "glitch" showed up at
www.harborfreight.com and I searched for "rechargeable batteries".
The information about the batteries was displayed in "gibberish".
Note: I did not have this issue with FF 3.6 or FF 2.0 (same place
on the web).

I installed FF14, but I couldn't launch it due to an issue with
a link to a .DLL file (didn't write down details).

I plan to remove FF 4.0 and install FF 3.6 unless...

Can someone tell me from your own experience, what version
of FF you use in Win98 with KernelEX?

Thank You in advance, John

I tried KernelEX about a year ago on a win98 system I was working on.
Though it did allow me to install which ever version of FF was current
at the time...it was way too buggy to be usable

There is a possibility K-Meleon will work with a bit of minor tweaking

(never tried it though)

I'm so damn fed up with having to upgrade that I'm giving up. I run
Win98se exclusively and have Kernal-Ex installed. The rest of my
computer works fine. It's just the goddamn browsers that are always
causing problems. Hulu for example wont even allow FF 3.x to be used.
Not that I really care though. The internet is nearly dead. Usenet is
99% dead and even email is not used by many people anymore. The whole
internet has become Facebook. You could not pay me enough to use
Facebook.

I finally just said "**** it". There is so little on the web that is
worth reading that I just gave up. I tolds my ISP to shut off my
high-speed internet, which saves me enough money each month to get
several good meals or other things I enjoy. My phone company has free
dialup internet, which works fine for email and the few newsgroups that
are still worth reading. FF 3.x still gets me a weather radar map, and
occasional use of Wikipedia is I'm looking something up. I used so
spend at least 2 hours online each day, now it's normally 10 minutes.

There just is not enough online to make it worth the continual hassle of
upgrading, buying new hardware and then having to pay an ISP on top of
that. I do have an XP computer too, but because of security, I keep all
my private personal stuff on that machine, and honestly I have never
liked XP and still dont.

My computer is just for running offline programs now, and that is fine
with me.

We can all thank these assholes who program the websites to include all
the useless crap they add these days to the sites. The old plain HTML
sites relayed information just as well as they do today, and did so much
faster and easier. All that is needed to relay information is simple
text and pictures. All this Flash crap and scripts are just annoyances.

By the way, I have K-Meleon 1.54. That is the last version that will
run on Win98. I used to love K-meleon, even more than FF, but it gets
so many script errors these days that I stopped using it, or run it with
java script disabled, which means half the websites dont work properly.

K-Meleon1.6.0_Beta2 does *NOT* work with Win98. Windows 2000 or higher
is required.

In a way, i'm almost glad the internet is dying. I've wasted too many
years of my life fighting with forced upgrades. I dont remodel my home
everytime a new building material is developed and I'm fed up with
playing the computer upgrade game because some asshole decides that I
MUST load their damn scripts and flash videos. These days, I do more
useful things with my time and feel healthier too, because I'm not
spending hours sitting in front of a keyboard getting fat. I even
subscribed to the newspaper again, because the news media websites are
some of the worst to load. It's much easier to read the paper and much
less stressful than waiting for a goddamn webpage to load and fighting
with script errors and other annoyances. While the paper costs a few
bucks, it's still cheaper than an ISP and all the electricity needed for
the computer.

Maybe the old ways were really the best ways!!!!

My friend , Ted once asked me, "What ever happened to the good old days?"

I replied, "They haven't gotten here yet!"

BTW: I guess I am a bit of an old timer myself. I just retired on Friday.

I started college in 1967... back in the punch card days and hated
computers so much that by 1982 I said I would never touch a computer again.

I used a typewriter and the US Mail.

Problem was, I was being left out. Even my mother had a computer...
she and my daughter were corresponding by email and I was left out.

In 1999 (my now wife) gave me here old computer... a P-1 with Windows
95. Within six months I was pretty well caught up on technology...
but soon got caught in the upgrade game. I got a digital camera
and needed USB so was forced to upgrade to Win98...and of course get
more RAM.

You know the rest of the story.

Anyway, since I have an engineering background , I soon got into
computer repair and learned that if I spread the word I could get an
almost endless supply of "old" or not working computers...free.

Three years back I switched over to Linux as my full time OS
and was using a ten year old computer that worked just fine.
I recently put the Linux hard drive into a machine that was only five
years old...for me that is the same as brand new.

If I were you I would not shy away from technology...
the Internet is by no means dead.

If you do not like the idea of Linux...I bet it would not be too hard to
find an XP machine ...free.

Though Microsoft will soon be dropping support,
I am sure XP will be viable for *many* more years.

My DSL service is not much money. I save money here by not having a TV
and by not having to pay for cable.
