Default Windows 98 SE: Windows Explorer asks for Internet connection

Recently Windows Explorer opens irregularly, with a dialog box indicating
that there is no Internet connection available and halts local browsing of
files until this dialog box is closed. No dial-up connection has been made,
yet Windows Explorer apparently seeks one before allowing access to local
drives. Having searched extensively the Knowledge Base, I cannot locate any
instructions which might aid me in defeating this annoying habit of Windows
Explorer (WE). [WE worked fine until this point.]

My question: how do I restore the independence of WE from Internet
connectivity and return to using WE for local file management without having
each session to click "Try Again" or [X] (closing) this dialog box to proceed
with local file management? It seems as though Internet Explorer (IE) and WE
now have become completely linked and I would rather not have to rebuild my
machine, as support for Win98/SE will soon be unavailable (a rebuild might
thus cause me toloose all of the patches from Microsoft Critical Updates
section) -- WE previously operated separate from IE, was not dependent on an
Internet connection, and this problem has surfaced only in the last month or
so.

System details:
-Windows 98 SE with all critical updates
-dial-up connection only
-IE 6.x version

I'm familiar with registry edits, can successfully change said without
harming system, and am wondering if some sort of registry key has been
altered somehow to now expect access to the Internet when opening WE (which I
SOLELY use for local file management; browsing is ALWAYS through IE). Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

(1) Undo Active Desktop.

(a) R-Clk the Desktop, point to Active Desktop, & select Customize my
Desktop.
(b) Uncheck "View my Active Desktop as a WEB page" & Apply.

Is there anything in the box under that item? Those are WEB sites that
would appear on the Desktop. Delete them.

(c) At the Effects tab, uncheck "Hide icons when the Desktop is viewed
as a WEB page" & OK.
(d) R-Clk the Desktop, & uncheck "View as WEB page".

(2) "START, Settings, Folder Options, General tab". Set to "Classic
style". If all gets better, click "Custom...", & gingerly go back to how
you like it. But stay away from "Enable all Web related content...".

Better update defs & do a virus scan too.

http://www.mcafee.com/us/
Free online scan. I think it will not effect a cure, but only report.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Also McAfee. Will effect a cure for certain viruses only.

Thanks PCR for your post-reply.

I neglected to state in my original posting that my desktop is not utilizing
Active Desktop. Thus, (1) is already set up as you had advised.

I've applied (2) to my system and will update on your second response (I use
Norton Antivirus/SystemWorks 2004 Pro on my machine, and scan weekly for any
viruses/other troublesome malware) once I have performed a cold reboot to
determine if the problem persists.

Once again, many thanks for taking the time to address my question!

You are welcome. Uhuh, well, try that online McAfee scan. It won't hurt to double check on Norton, & it isn't as if you are installing all of McAfee. It will leave an entry at... C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\McFreeScan Class..., is all.

The only other thing I can think is the computer expects you are Networking & want access to another computer's files. I don't know much about that. You'd probably have an otherwise unexplainable drive letter, though, showing in Explorer. Also, may as well uncheck both items at...
"Control Panel, Network, File & Print Sharing button",
which allows the reverse.

Finally, can you have installed a legitimate app that might want to be connecting to the NET to check for updates?

Default Windows 98 SE: Windows Explorer asks for Internet connection

Hello PCR again:

So far, success & thank you -- it appears that your suggestion (2) worked
upon cold reboot under Classic style; I then proceeded with my preferred
viewing of Windows Explorer by clicking View and selecting "as Web Page",
then clicking View again, Folder Options..., View tab, and under "Folder
views" clicking "Like Current Folder" and performed another cold reboot. The
problem seems to have gone away for now, but I'll keep all of your
suggestions locally in a txt file I can access should this problem resurface.
[Another ommission probably on my part was that I had WE originally set up
this way -- sounds like I may have to go through this exercise if/when the
Working Offline issue comes up again.] In each case of testing the progress,
it should be noted that the computer was NOT connected to the Internet via
dialup, so perhaps this has resolved the matter for now.

Your fast advice has saved me a lot of hassle in my day-to-day work on my
(old) machine; I'm very grateful for your assistance.

Best,

refugio

You are welcome. Good! Glad to see it seems to be over! Explorer may have come to think it was IE, & therefore requested to go online. They are closely related & can be set to do each others work. But it's best to keep them different, as you do! Keep us informed of any further development or mishap!

Default Windows 98 SE: Windows Explorer asks for Internet connection

Hello again,

It seems that the only way for my configuration to avoid the problem is to
stick with setting the WE in Classic style ONLY. When I returned after
another cold boot as a normal course of daily business to my machine, having
set the customization of viewing WE as a Web Page, the problem returned.
Though it was convenient to see the directory in larger print aside the file
list (I use detail mode), this feature does not outway the very annoying
request for an Internet connection. Today, with things reset to Classic, no
request. I'll keep it that way, unless there's another workaround!

Just thought I would update you, per your suggestion!

Thanks again for the help.

| set the customization of viewing WE as a Web Page

You mean...?...

"START button, Settings, Folder Options, General tab, Bolt 'Customize based...', Settings button, Bolt 'Enable all web-related content...'".

BEST stay away from that, anyhow! Everything else on that requestor is OK, though, with the possible exception of "Underline icon titles...". DON'T let Explorer confuse itself with IE, for safety reasons!

| Though it was convenient to see the directory in larger print aside the file
| list (I use detail mode),

You may STILL select "View, As WEB Page" in Explorer, though, by R-Clk in it's R-Pane. That should be fine! If it is going bad, maybe turn off Customization for that folder at least temporarily. Here is what I know of Customization...

Here are two articles dug up by Glee in an ancient thread...

Customizing a Folder's Web View:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en...asp?frame=true

Customizing Folders with Desktop.ini
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ing/custom.asp

And here is all I know about it, until I go study those articles myself...

Acc. to "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), p. 172, a Desktop.ini
is a system file created when you "View, Customize" a folder, possibly
along with a modified copy of folder.htt (HTML template). Click one and
it will open in Notepad; they are not all the same inside. Supposedly,
the ini & the htt will be deleted when you remove the customization;
that doesn't quite appear to be true, but the ini is cleared of most
data. I appear to have 23 Desktop.ini's currently, as "Find, F&F,
Desktop.ini" shows. As far as the htt, I never did see one inside a
folder, using Explorer. I saw 17 of them BOTH before and after removing
a customization, however, using "Find, F&F, *.htt". (Update: I see those
htt's after setting:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Adv
anced
ShowSuperHidden 0x00000001 (1) --DWORD: 1.)

Acc. to "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), p. 199, special
folders can also contain a Desktop.ini which "may have a reference to a
dynamic link library (dll) file that defines a specific set of behaviors
for the folder".

There are other ways to create them, and they are sometimes involved in
copy protection schemes. Also third party programs, such as
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's Folders creates or modifies them to store
pointers to the folder icons. I have such pointers in some
desktop.ini's, although I never did install "Folders".

But it's best to keep them different, as you do! Keep us informed of any further development or mishap!

Default Windows 98 SE: Windows Explorer asks for Internet connection

Hi PCR,

May I first thank you for your continued interest in assisting me with this
'anomaly' -- it's very much appreciated!

In setting WE to be viewed as a Web Page, I performed that by opening WE,
and then from the View menu checking the "as a Web Page" option within WE.
Then, I clicked View, in WE, Folder Options, selected the View tab, and
clicked "Like Current Folder"; this method of customization differs from
yours using button, Settings, Folder Options, General tab, Bolt 'Customize
based...', Settings button, Bolt 'Enable all web-related content...'". I
stay away from that process completely, and have never used it on my machine.

Looks like you have given me much to read and consider, but for now I am
resolved to accept the plain WE (i.e., 'Classic') as I would rather not have
to see that annoying window about an Internet connection.

Once I have a chance to look over the materials you have graciously
presented, I'll follow up and again thank you for following me through this
rather trivial but perplexing oddity with Windows 98SE (I'm sure that my post
isn't the only one referencing said quirks!).

Best,

Supposedly,
the ini & the htt will be deleted when you remove the customization;
that doesn't quite appear to be true, but the ini is cleared of most
data. I appear to have 23 Desktop.ini's currently, as "Find, F&F,
Desktop.ini" shows. As far as the htt, I never did see one inside a
folder, using Explorer. I saw 17 of them BOTH before and after removing
a customization, however, using "Find, F&F, *.htt". (Update: I see those
htt's after setting:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Adv
anced
ShowSuperHidden 0x00000001 (1) --DWORD: 1.)

Acc. to "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), p. 199, special
folders can also contain a Desktop.ini which "may have a reference to a
dynamic link library (dll) file that defines a specific set of behaviors
for the folder".

There are other ways to create them, and they are sometimes involved in
copy protection schemes. Also third party programs, such as
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's Folders creates or modifies them to store
pointers to the folder icons. I have such pointers in some
desktop.ini's, although I never did install "Folders".

| Hello again,
|
| It seems that the only way for my configuration to avoid the problem is to
| stick with setting the WE in Classic style ONLY. When I returned after
| another cold boot as a normal course of daily business to my machine, having
| set the customization of viewing WE as a Web Page, the problem returned.

| request. I'll keep it that way, unless there's another workaround!
|
| Just thought I would update you, per your suggestion!
|
| Thanks again for the help.
