Default Boots up, but can't open a thing afterwards

My son uses windows 98.
Recently after he boots up he has not been able to open my
computer or any programs.
He can get into safe mode. Could the problem be corrected
from there?
Please help; he wants to use my pc.
Thanks

Boot the computer in Safe Mode and then use Start - Run - MSCONFIG

Go to the Startup tab and uncheck everthing that is loading at Startup
except for:
ScanRegistry
LoadPowerProfile (2 entries - both are needed)
TaskMonitor.

Make a list of all of the items that you unchecked.

Shut down and restart the computer normally. It should now start up
okay.

WARNING:: Your antivirus software is no longer being loaded at
startup. Do not go onto the Internet, download email, etc. until the
antivirus protection has been loaded and is fully operational.

Post the list of the startup items that you unchecked back here and we
will look it over for possible culprits.

If the computer still does not start up okay in normal mode then that
indicates that there is likely a hardware related issue with some
accessory device or other. Post the results back here, including the
complete text of any error messages, if it does not start up normally.

Good luck

You have a number of adware/spyware programs in that list. I suggest that you
re-enable all in msconfig, but do NOT reboot. This is so the entries can be
correctly delete when you run the tools listed below. Then with all programs and
windows closed, run the programs below, in the order given. Obviously you must
download them first and install those that require installation.

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for
Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and
remove what it finds.
Ad-Awa

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove
the items in RED only.
SpyBot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe
Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick
HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or
similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums:

http://boards.cexx.org/

In your post, please state your problem clearly and what you've done so far to fix
it.

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

See the "housekeeping" you should complete before you post your log:
