Default PLEASE HELP--- INTERNET EXPLORER AND MSN MESSANGER

Please help me several days ago i started having problems with using internet explorer after i have signed into my msn messanger account. the problem is that every time i try to open IE it takes literally 5-10 minutes to open one page if i have already opened my messanger(MSN). i also keep geting an error saying that explorer has caused an error in kernel ....im sorry i dont have the full details but as soon as i get this message the comp shutsdown on me so i can never get that message copied.
Now for me the kicker is that if i open IE beforei open messanger it runs fine, as soon as i open MSN Messanger IE comes to a standstill in loading the pages. even wierder is if i open messanger and evenif i exit it out the IE still wont work so in order for me to open IE after i have opened or closed messanger i have to reboot my comp.
now i have already run numerous virus scans and the only thing is that i had a exploit basecode.gen virus several weeks ago but the was removed from the files it affected(temporary files) everyday i run new virus scans and they are all coming back clean now but several days after this virus was removed was when i started having the IE and MSN messanger problem. The day before i started having the messanger/IE problem i got a popup saying my windows program was low on rescources(whatever that means)but my windows says there is 64% available not sureif they are the same thing or not so i have also made sure that all my windows updates are done and that still did not work.I have also at the advise of a friend defragmented my hard drive, please help me i cant stand this comp anymore nad am getting very fed up, i cant even talk to peole and check my email at the same time, as im sure many of you would find difficult to tolerate as well. so if anyone can please please please tell me how to fix this i will forever be in your debt.thank you so much in advance,
M.

Search "Messenger"; Windows 98; Full Text; Exact Phrase; came up with
many. Here is one...
