need driver for MFG Flash Drive
I have several sticks that I got free from my son's college orientation.
They work fine on my laptop (XP), but I can't find a driver for my desktop (98SE). The only info I can get from the Properties is: MFG Flash Drive USB Device. The laptop loaded a driver from the XP files. The version is: 5.1.2535.0. Can anyone help me find a driver? Thank you. |

Use any of the generic packages offered by various manufacturers (PNY,
Lexar, etc.) and edit the .inf file used to install a flash drive of about the same capacity; in the hardware id sections, modify one of the existing IDs to match the hardware ID of the flash, which you can find from XPs registration of the flash when you use it in your laptop. Some of these packages are zip files, and expand to give you a folder which will include the .inf, but others generate it from a 'start' app. I used one that I could expand, as it was easier, but I also managed to do it with the other type by working backwards from an aborted installation. Be aware that a disfunctional inf file will not give you an error message when you attempt to use if for installation, other than the installation failure. If you don't want to mess about with the .inf file (it really isn't all that hard), then just try some of these generic packages the various mfgrs offer--they often have hardware ids for the competition right in them, so that they will often install many different types of flash. Support for W98 on the mfgrs part on this issue is generally poor, so you'll have to adapt. If you try this, don't forget to uninstall the ones that don't work. Hope this isn't too vague-- Joe "swarm6" wrote in message ... I have several sticks that I got free from my son's college orientation. There is a generic Native USB drive on the Web and the file is called nusb22e.exe. You can search for native USB driver or I can send you the file. I understand it is not 100% compatibile with everything, but it works with everything I've thrown at it. It's freeware. |
