tried PC133 memstix - DBLBUFF & IFSHLP went corrupt/missing
At startup - There is a registry/configuration error.
Will not open Windows, but says: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS Also, I think it said something about win.com not loading??? After trying to increase memory with two 256MB PC133 mem sticks, I got the above errors. What I did: I am trying to help a friend with her computer. I first added my own 128MB PC100 mem sticks (two of them), and it worked fine. I had some other memory, which I tried - two 256MB PC133 mem sticks. Because the computer had "frozen" prior to this, when I restarted it, it said "now safe to shut down or press Ctrl/Alt/Del to restart" (not exact words). The restart seemed to be moving quicker, but the above messages ( DBLBUFF.SYS and IFSHLP.SYS) came up and Windows could not be fully loaded. It did say to go to Command and do a SCANREG, and that said something about putting OS in another partition/directory?? (can't remember words). I realize now that the PC133 memory was too fast for this computer. Did it permanently ruin this or can I use the OS to reinstall these two files?? -- Barb Zakrzewski |

Since you did not delete any files, any files needed during boot should
still be there. With the old memory installed, try booting to Safe mode. I suspect that the message that you cannot quite catch is recommending that you install to a new folder. If you still get the message about the files being missing, then take a look at this article: Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188867 If you continue to get the same error message about being unable to find these files, then be sure to take a look at this article. It's possible that her hard drive has been compressed using dblspace or drvspace and that the drive is not mounting. To determine that for sure, boot to Command prompt only and from the c:\ prompt, type: dir /ah Look for a very large file named dblspace.000 or drvspace.000. If you see this, then just type: dir w* If you do not see a Windows folder, then the folder is inside the compressed file. The first thing to try is to boot to the startup floppy and run Scandisk on the hard drive. That will often fix the compressed drive and mount the drive. Patty (and anybody else!) -
I have not been able to check out anything yet (sub at school) and now going away for weekend, but here's a bit more info in addition to the original post- After letting it go to Command Prompt, besides the above error msgs, it also says: "Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading Windows." Then it sits at C: prompt. After typing SCANREG as suggested on screen, it comes back with:... found an error .. unable to fix...Try deleting some files to free up space...If ..doesn't work, .. install Windows to a new directory. Please - if you have any other suggestions, so when I come back Monday, I can "attack" this computer (which is now here at my home), I would really appreciate it. I have her boot floppy and OS CD; can I just start up with the CD and try to transfer those files to the hard drive??? Again, I haven't tried anything yet, but am open to suggestions. tried PC133 memstix - DBLBUFF & IFSHLP went corrupt/missing
Patty -
Can't boot to Safe Mode - tries (...bypassing startup files..), but goes to the missing/corrupted files, also "Cannot find Win.com, unable to continue loading Windows." I tried this with the original 96MB RAM (64MB & 32MB PC100), and after a bunch of attempts, I switched to the two 128MB PC100 sticks (total 320MB) I had put in last week (and had been working fine before I tried the 256MB PC133 mem stick). I get the same messages with the increased memory as the original. I looked thru that s'port article, and some of its links. It mentioned that bad memory could damage the registry. As noted before, the computer does say there is a registry/configuration error at startup before the other error messages.** To be thorough, I did the dir /ah at Command prompt, and saw no dblspace or drvspace files; I also did dir w* and saw the Windows folder dir. I did try the boot floppy - it went to the startup options and then all the same error messages. It "seemed" to be reading the floppy, but it never went to an A: prompt. I ran Scanreg, and got the same messages as before - can't fix the error in registry - try to install to a different directory. I just tried to get to the A: drive, after regular start from hard drive (error msgs). Got A: prompt from C:, then typed dir/p. It sees all those boot files, but to check, I tried fdisk command, and it said "Data error reading drive A", abort, retry, etc.. This was with my own boot floppy as well as hers. I did notice that her MS boot disk as well as her OS CD do not say second edition, so I think it is original Windows 98. I was at the A prompt, and typed Scandisk C:. It started the Scandisk and has a whole bunch of files that are damaged or have sizes that are misreported; I just keep hitting Fix; I did try to make the Undo disk first, but it seemed to do it very quickly, so I don't know if it worked. ?? Before the Scandisk, I did try to get the OS CD on the computer. I did get to the Setup screen, but chose to exit. I know I can reinstall Windows from that if I have to. Will I lose all her other programs?? I'm pretty sure I've re-installed Windows before without losing existing programs and data. I'm forgetting, 'cuz it's been a few years, but maybe she'd ONLY lose it all if I fdisked it. Can you advise here?? I really don't want to lose her pictures and other installed programs, etc. Could that PC133 memory have "blasted" the computer 'cuz it was too fast?? Or possibly it was a bad stick?? I've never had this problem with memory - usually if it's not compatible, it sits there and does nothing, or the computer starts and just sees the original memory (if you were adding more mem.) -- I'm trying to download the simmtest now, then put it on a floppy; I hope that computer sees the floppy. If not, should I use a 98 computer to download another copy (same format computers)?? I was running Scandisk last night when I posted this and I finished it this AM. I think I copied it OK, but I'm typing this on an XP and that computer is a Win98 (not 2nd edit), and it's not seeing the floppy as even being formatted. So, this is what the Scandisk said at the end: Scandisk found and fixed the following: 514 invalid directory entries removed 112 dir. entries' FAT chains - truncated 131 inv. dir. entries - corrected 1 crosslink was corrected 68 lost dir. - reinstated 34,305 lost clusters - saves as files Scandisk did not fix all the errors it found. I don't think I've ever seen that many errors.!! I can't believe trying that PC133 memstick could cause this; is it just a big coincidence??? There are no registry backups - I was able to get to that sysbckup dir - but "file not found". After all this, I restarted the comp - try to boot to Windows - and got the same error messages. If I end up reinstalling Windows, how do I do it to a different directory or should I just overinstall it? tried PC133 memstix - DBLBUFF & IFSHLP went corrupt/missing
asp4dos.com is for a vortex sound card that can be "rem"ed out in the
autoexec.bat file or re-installed.. Aureal drivers are discontinued, search for the 1189 drivers first then install the a3ddrivers312.exe for the vortex 1 chip. As for the other problems because of the memory change, "next time" boot to safe mode after installing any new processors or memory FIRST, then restart in normal mode then do a SEARCH FOR NEW HARWARE and let it rebuild the driver info files if it needs to.. BEFORE running any programs...then reboot again to normal mode. This seems to reset the registry and the proper code for "memory speed" and processor instructions, wait states, timings, etc. in the vmm*.vxd files or registry entries they access while loading Windows.. Also, as an aside info, newer memory no longer supports different speeds settings i.e. must be set at the proper speed AND timings in the bios before starting the OS. Your 133mhz memory MAY have been mistimed in the bios OR the bios may not support or properly support the 133 speed and caused faulty memory/ read/writes to disk... If the motherboard did not properly support or time the memory OR can not read a newer memory stick "config chip" it may also cause the types of problems you are having.. And before someone attempts to state the computer wouldn't boot with the wrong memory or configuration,, better check that on the net first... "Barbara Z" wrote in message ... I probably should have restarted the computer, shut down properly, and then tried the different memory. Consider getting a second hard drive for the machine. Do a fresh install to it.
