Default Standby mode

My system behaves erratically as regards Standby.

1. If I put it into Standby manually, it goes quiet, the screen goes into
sleep mode and it will all start up fine when I press Enter.

2. If I leave it to go into Standby of its own accord, it sometimes does so
and comes out again correctly (Windows is set to put it into Standby after 20
mins). Other times, however, it seems to go only partially into Standby mode
- the screen goes to sleep but the disk continues to run and the system will
not come back to life if I press Enter. The only way to recover is to power
off/on.

Please help.
