Deja.com still owned Usenet and not Google.

Seriously? I thought that Usenet was one of those big amorphous
co-operatives that is not owned by any single firm. Am I wrong?

It's incorrect to say that deja.com "owned" usenet.

Nobody ever "owned" usenet. Now, maybe someone does or did once own
domains such as "usenet.com" or "usenet.net", etc, but that's not the
same thing.

Deja maintained their own historical repository of usenet posts, and you
could say that they "owned" that repository, but anyone else could have
their own similar repository containing many of the same posts without
being in conflict with deja.

Lookup deja or dejanews or google-groups in wikipedia. You'll get the
full history and details there.

Never mind, I think I get it.. Google Groups is one of the Banes of Usenet,
gets people in thinking it's some kind of forum, and making mistakes that
annoy long-time users. Deja and Google are basically portals. And the error
comes mainly from trying to convince people they're putting the ocean into
the bowl instead of pouring the bowl into the ocean!

I imagine they do it because it's easier to sell a gated community if you can
convince the residents that the riff-raff are somehow 'outside'.

and we know what 32
does. I saw a LOT of 8's... (I'm assuming you mean 40 decimal, as hex
40 is decimal 64 and is also documented.

What's baking my noodle right now is the difference between bit 5 and bit 6
(flags = 32, and 64 respectively). The descriptions seem to suggest that 5
allows a file copy only if the source is newer, and 6 allows it only if the
destination is older, i.e. unlike 5 no copy occurs if the versions are the
same (could be useful to allow hacked versions to remain in place). I tried
all the tests I can think of, and the behaviour seems to be identical with
bit 5.
