Default Windows Explorer hangs when deleting a large number of files

When deleting more than about 350 files Windows freezes but the deletion is
done, what I see after deleting WE.
There is a get around solution at www.helmrohr.de but I wondering why
Microsoft is not able to fix this Problem. Or is there a proper fix there?

"I wondering why Microsoft is not able to fix this Problem."

1. It isn't clear that the problem you had was caused by a defect in
Windows 98 rather than by something else you have installed.

2. Microsoft stopped doing new work on Windows 98 some time ago, so
they would not modify Win98 now even if they discovered this problem
now.

I'm not finding what you say at the URL you posted, & I don't like
seeing red X's there! You may do the deletes at a Windows DOS Prompt
with impunity (just be careful with DELTREE)-- but I FULLY agree with
Chauvin & cquirke on the issue. It's also true some 3rd party apps like
PCMag's HDValet can do it, provided you choose it's option not to
involve the Recycle Bin. In Explorer, it seems I always will get a low
resources warning when the problem activates, though that warning may be
hiding behind another screen! Then, a reboot is the best cure.

http://www.pcmag.com/ Has many, many great utilities: BHOCop, COA2,
ContextEdit, Crackup, DiskAction, EndItAll2, Folders, HDValet, InCtrl5,
ListZapper, RegDetective, RegEdit+, StartupCop, WinTidy, etc. Now,
suddenly, there is a subscription fee at PCMag, but, it's worth it,
especially if you can get the whole bundle that is there.

..........Start..................
Yearly billing $19.97
Yearly billing (For PC Magazine subscribers) $14.97
Monthly billing (limit 3 downloads/month) $4.97
..........End...................

You may try Google, but do you really want to download from any odd
site?

It is clear that the WE problem is due to IE6. It is known for a long time,
not for me but for MS and they have no idea why IE6 is causing it. That's
why they didn't fix it. It would be only fair, if MS would have provided a
solution, because they preach the necessity of installing the latest IE (IE6)
due to some (or many?) weaknesses of IE5.
You gallantly defend MS but simple users see it differently.
Thanks for your comment

Absolutely, as Bela says, Chauvin &/or cquirke have definitively proven
it is not a Win98 issue. It only happens when IE6 is added to Win98.
This was proven by upgrading to IE6 on a freshly installed Win98. IE5
was fine. IE6 can be made to work by switching certain .dll's back to
IE5, but it isn't an optimal solution.

DON'T make him sink his FANGS into you, Starbuck! Him or cquirke OR
Chauvin!

Rick,
you should be able to download DelCopyMove.exe, the trouble is, that the
description is only in German:
www.helmrohr.de
downloads
on the third page you can click on download ...
(You get a self-unpacking file)

I only use this gadget to erase large directories, I have no problems to
copy them.
The program works in two steps, so you avoid inadvertant deletions.
If you need it, I can write you a description in Gernman, send an E-Mail to

Okay you mean this link:
http://www.helmrohr.de/Download/DelCopyMove.htm

worldwide forums where email bots scan and havest them to send you lots of
spam)

Thank you BelaK, unfortunately I only can speak one language and that is
English and so if you do it in German it won't help me. However, if I go to
the Babel Fish Translator website
http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr and
translate that webpage: http://www.helmrohr.de/Download/DelCopyMove.htm
to English this is what I come up with:

~~~~~~~~~~Translated German to English~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
copy/paste (as is)
DelCopyMove: File operations under Windows of Helmut Rohrbeck Click on the
following entries, if you need only information for one a certain function:
Installation Deinstallation Files select file operation implement deletion
copying updating transport shifting restrictions On some Windows 98-SE ME
systems it is added after installation of the "InterNet Explorers 6,0" that
the Windows Explorer after extensive file operations - copies deletes or
shifts - only much hesitating or not at all reacts. Tests resulted in that
when implementing these file operations over Scripts this problem does not
arise. The solution with two Scripts, offered here, is to help concerning.
For all Windows systems are interesting the functions updating and the
transport of files. Installation: Unpack the file "DelCopyMove.zip" into
its temp listing (default value). Open they thereafter the temp listing in
the Windows Explorer and doubleclick you to the file "Install.vbs", so that
them are implemented. With successful installation an appropriate message
appears. Deinstallation: Been made by system control software. "DelCopyMove
of Helmut Rohrbeck" mark and on "adding/removing" click. With successful
Deinstallation appears an appropriate message. Files select: After
installation you have a new entry in the context menu of the Windows
Explorers, if you click with the right mouse button on one or more marked
files and files and select a sending on: The new entry is called
Auswahl.vbs. If it is clicked, the files and file of a list in the temp
listing, marked in the Explorerfenster, are added, which is called
"Files.txt". They can mark several files and files at the same time (with
pressed shift key), before you call a "sending on". The number of files,
which can send you to a script, is limited by the maximum length of the
command line of your system. If the total number of the indications in all
files exceeds this border, sending fails. An error message "argument list
appears too long" when clicking on "Auswahl.vbs". If this error message
appears, the marked files and file were not taken up to the list. If you
mark less, then it will function. They know arbitrarily often files and
files over "sending on" - Auswahl.vbs of the list to add, these is only
deleted after implementing the desired action. File operation implement:
After finishing you click to the selection now with the right mouse button
on the goal file, into which files are to be copied or shifted. If it is
not yet present, put on it before again. After click with the right mouse
button on the desired goal file appears in the context menu additionally
"file operation implement". This entry is present only after a selection
and after implementing a file operation is again deleted. After clicking
the entry a new window with announcement of the selected goal file, the
selected files and switching surfaces for actions opens. Delete: All files
and files listed in the list "Files.txt" deletes as selection. The goal
clicked with the call of the file operation remains unconsidered thereby,
it is no matter, which is clicked here. Copy: Copies all files and files
listed in the list "Files.txt" as selection into the selected goal. In the
goal already existing files are overwritten. If write protected files are
to be overwritten, the copying process with an error message breaks off.
Use a "updating", thus also write protected files in the goal listing are
overwritten. Update: Copied only files and files, which are not yet present
in the goal and overwrites existing files (also write protected) in the
goal then only if the source file is newer than in the goal. Transport:
Copied only selected files. A log file puts on "_ ActLog.txt" in the source
listing. With the following copies from it been added or changed files are
only copied. Overwrites in the goal existing files then only if the source
file is newer than in the goal (also write protected). This function is
mainly meant for it for adjusting contents of listings on different
computers with a storage medium (e.g. USB stick). Shift: Shifts the files
listed in the list "Files.txt" as selection into the selected goal, if this
is on the same drive assembly. Caution: If files already of the same name
are present in the goal, there is an error message! Restrictions: Delete:
Files in use or system files cannot be deleted. Copy: Write protected files
in the goal listing cannot be overwritten. Use in such cases a "updating".
Shift: Existing files of the same name in the goal file lead to the abort.
In these cases the selected action with an error message is broken off. The
list "Files.txt" in the temp listing is deleted thereafter only if the
indicated window with "breaking off" is closed. Under Windows NT, 2000, XP
must possess the implementing user sufficient rights, in order to be able
to implement the actions. NORTON/SYMANTEC programs warn possibly of a
"malicious" script. You can this warning confidently ignore and switch off.
Deactivate the script blocking
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I downloaded his program, and looked inside his VBS files code.
Perhaps the scripts can be edited so that everything can be shown in
English for English speaking peoples too.

Basically his website is saying that this anomaly is immune to Delete
actions done with VBS, and that's interesting, and also I know PCR speaks
of a different third party program that can do the deleting job too - and
all that is fine and dandy, but for me, I'd like to find the original
problem and fix it so that it works normal - I don't want to install
program ontop of program just to have another program go the long way
around doing what the original one was suppose to do right in the first
place; but I must admit this vbs workaround is interesting.

thank you for the reply BelaK
