Default How to recover drop-down

http://www.kellys-korner.com/win98.htm For an excellent Bin write-up &
fixes
http://www.aumha.org/ Perhaps here too
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/reg_files.html Badour has one.
www.aha.ru/~mwz/files/bin-fix.cab Zhilin has something
http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/er1026.htm Leboeuf's stuff
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=136517

I actually didn't run the .reg programs I downloaded from Kelly, which
would rebuild the Recycle Bin in the Registry. I looked through the docs
and extracted this fix for a corrupt Bin:

1. "START, Shut Down, Restart in MS DOS mode"
2. Enter "Deltree /y c:\recycled\"
(No quotes. You need the closing backslash [\], she says.)
Repeat for each partition you may have with a Bin.
3. EXIT or Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows.
4. Delete something useless & empty the Bin.

BE CAREFUL, though; DELTREE is powerful. Get all the way to the end of
that Deltree line, before you hit the Enter key.

If you have anything in the Bin you want to keep, restore it first. The
Bin will regenerate after re-boot-- totally empty.

Hint: The proper term for the "drop-down" in this case is "Context Menu". Also,
when searching the MSKB, don't restrict the "Product" list and try searching for
obvious phrases in the Title only. Use Exact Phrase or double-quotes to contain
phrases.

Searching All Products for "Recycle Bin" in Title, I found 57 articles, the
first of which describes your situation exactly, even if it isn't necessarily
the answer.

Too bad, that article sounded good. Surely, though, one of those URLs I

| How do I recover?

"Empty Recycle Bin" is shaded (present, but not selectable) when the Bin
is empty. That is normal. Are you sure your Bin settings allow files to
be put into the Bin? (Damn, I guess you are. I mean, you do see files
inside, right?)

Anyhow, those URLs really should have something for you. BUT, if Kelly
has removed them, I do have her .reg's that will totally rebuild the Bin
in the Registry.

Thank you.

Empty Recycle Bin is shaded, correct. When it has an occupant, it's
lighted. I'm able to click and open it without a problem. Oh, yes. I can
load it plum full even. It's the rt click bringing up the Context Menu
which lacks the necessary line to empty the beast. Here's the problem for
that line is nowhere to be seen.

Anyhow, those URLs really should have something for you. BUT, if Kelly
has removed them, I do have her .reg's that will totally rebuild the Bin

A thought. Can the bins be destroyed and then rebuilt? 1) I'm
squeamish on that for I'm not all that comfy with the configuration of what
they may be linked to since I don't know; 2) would hate to cause further
problems. By destroyed I mean non-existent so they and related material has
to be rebuilt from scratch.

If you'd be so kind as to send those along, I'd appreciate it. Just to
keep us on the same page.

There's always the final solution. shudder, cringe Starting to think
it might be more economical even if less informative.

So far I've come up dry. Closest is MS KB#173416 and it's a bust.

Well... you do not say... where you are expecting to see "Empty
Recycle Bin". It shows in two places (shaded, if there are no
files)... (a) R-Clk the Recycle Bin on the Desktop (or in Explorer).
(b) Open the Bin, & it is in the File menu.

I work via the Windows Explorer (File Manager). For instance, Lft
click on Windows Explorer icon on Taskbar bringing up its menu. Click on
and open Logical F which expands showing sub-dirs and the Recycle Bin. Left
clk the Recycle Bin opening it to check if there is something there I might
want to rescue. What's there I want gone. Rt click on the Recycle Bin. A
menu (context menu) drops down. Near the top (my usual) is the line for
emptying the Recycle Bin. Until now when it (the command land that empties
the Recycle Bin) is absent regardless of where the Recycle Bin is empty or
full whichever Recycle Bin is used. The same result going through "My
Computer."

It shows nowhere else. Are you R-Clkng a deleted file & expecting to
see it? You won't! (Sorry, if you've actually answered this elsewhere
in this thread.)

No. I'm Rt Clicking on the Recycle Bin for a logical drive from
Windows Explorer. In turn, that drops a menu down. Up to this point all is
good. On that context menu (the drop down here), there is no line saying,
"Click me and I'll toss the Recycle Bin," or whatever it does say, and the
bin is emptied.

All bad things happen somewhere, sometime. That's why there are
super-heros, but let us hope you really have no problem here. What are
you R-Clkng?

See above.

Well, is the "Empty Recycle Bin" that you do see working when you
click it? And, what are your Bin settings? Where is your slider
set..?.. normally, it is at 10%.

Yes, the Recycle Bin itself. The command line that empties the bin is
missing in the context menu that drops down after a rt click on the Recycle
Bin as shown in Windows Explorer.

Setting for the slider is normal at 10%.

You say you have a F:drive. I haven't played with it, but are you set =
for each drive to have it's own individual Bin? Then, perhaps, only the =
Bin you've used will have an "Empty Recycle Bin" that is not shaded. But =
I can't think it won't show up at all.

I wish I could say what but I'm just thankful.

Thanks to you and all for the help. Deeply appreciated.
