CD ROM not accessible

Done that and it seen the win98 cd I had in drive, do you know how I can
fix
the Problem from here?

*Do I need to change the CDrom drive letter? If so how.
*Its still shows up as (D) in device manager and I'm still getting the
error
message.
*I could reformatt in DOS but I don't really want to do that if
nessesary.

Alright, apparently you wer able to get a directory reading (DIR) on a CD
from the
DOS boot,and you got an audio CD to play once but not again. I am not
clear about
whether or not you removed all entries in the CDROM category of Device
Manager from
SAFE MODE......did you?

54XCD-ROM So that's all I removed.

That probably is what fixed you, but glad the other matter also went well.

Funnily enough though, I did remove the device several times within the
device manager area, but to no avail. It was only when I renamed the drive
to E:\ that fully sorted the problem! When did the D:\ drive become RAM
drive and why??

I'm back on my own machine now and using the XP NG's, I thought I'd just
check out here to finalize any questions that came up,
but if you google under groups "Drive not accesable" you will see the
complexity of it, and nobody seemed to have an answer.
Hopefully if someone comes across this post it may help in some way.

I'm sure it will. It is I think possible you are right that changing the CD-ROM letter assigned by Windows was the fix that did it. CD-ROMs & their drivers are persnickety enough for that to be true. Anyhow, I don't know really WHAT cured mine after three days of a CD stuck in it! And what a horrible racket that was-- the day it would open!
