AOL hangs, IE won't start, Can't install any software
Win98 computer recently starting hanging in AOL. Sometimes it hangs as soon
as I start it, on the signon page. Other times, I get as far was connected and then hang when trying to access the internet. It will hang for as long as 2-20 minutes. Then it will free up for a while, then hang again. Internet Explorer will not launch at all. No error logs, nothing opens. Task Manager listed IE as not responding. So I have to 'end task' to get rid of it. So far, I have tried the following: 1. Reinstalled AOL. Happens on both AOL 4.0 and 7.0 software- both new and reinstalled versions. 2. Attempted to reinstall IE. After upgrade was completed, rebooted PC and it kept crashing on startup. Had to back off the upgrade back down to the original version. 3. Ran SCANDISK, disk defragment, checked registry, etc. Nothing appears to be wrong with the hardware. 4. Run resource monitor. Resources average about 65% free. 5. Cannot install any new/upgraded software. I get a Page fault accessing "log.dll". This happens for any software I try to install. I do not have a "log.dll" anywhere on my system. I did find a reference in the system information that there is a system hook to a window procedure from application rundll32.exe that is hooked by log.dll. Does anyone know what this means? Can I somehow get rid of it or restore it? 6. Spy software clean and up-to-date. Virus software is very outdated. It could be a virus but I cannot update my Norton (see 5 above) so I can not tell. I'm out of ideas? Can anyone help? THANKS! |

...Virus software is very outdated. It
could be a virus but I cannot update my Norton (see 5 above) so I can not tell. Not good. It certainly sounds Trojan-related. Try running, in order, the Panda and RAV free online scans (http://aumha.org/secure.php#freeav). Enable Show Hidden Files http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02092715262339, reboot into Safe Mode http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and delete *log.dll*. Without rebooting, run Norton LiveUpdate repeatedly until you get the "No further updates available" prompt. Then scan with NAV per http://aumha.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5878 Help with Hijackware http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE) Lon wrote: Win98 computer recently starting hanging in AOL.
