transferring files to new computer
I have windows 98 on my current computer and am going to buy a new computer
with windows XP. Can I transfer files from the old to new computer (such as Excel, Word, Norton) or should I buy those already installed on the new computer. I hate to pay for new ones if i don't need to. The word and excel programs i have are also 98. I'd appreciate any help. |

You will need to buy new applications if:
- Your existing app is not compatible with XP. Office 98 applications are fine, others may not be. - Your existing applications are OEM versions supplied as a package with the old machine. In that case your licence might stipulate that the applications can be used only with the original hardware - you need to check the licence conditions. It is not practical to copy installed applications from one machine to another, especially when there are different operating systems involved. So for your applications you have no choice but to uninstall the applications from the old machine and re-install them to the new machine. For your data files, Windows XP has a Files and Settings transfer wizard that will step you through the process of identifying what you want to collect from the old machine and copy it to appropriate locations on the new machine. The copy can be done using any media from floppy through to recordable CD, and also works across a network (which is the simplest and fastest). I don't know if it works from one disk to another (for instance, if you install the disk from the old machine into the new machine) but you could ask in an XP newsgroup. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "transferring files to new computer" transferring files to new wrote in message ... You need to check the XP newsgroups for the version of that application
being able to work in an XP environment. If so, then install in XP. XP file transfer was meant for email addresses, newsgroup settings, email settings, dial-up adapter settings, personal files. NOT for application transfer to XP. Check in a XP newsgroup for any more inability you have to search the internet for answers for such XP questions. Is there somewhere that I can check if any of the applications I have on my
machine (Win98SE) will not be compatible with WinXP? I will also be thinking about upgrading before long. Martin "Lil' Dave" wrote in message ... The MS site has a program there called "WinXP upgrade advisor", which you
can download - but it is a fairly large exe program (if you're on a dial up modem). Look at the XP part of their site.
