system always restart after loading modem
i have this problem, that the system always restart 3-4 tiemes after the
modem icon appears.(according to my ISP provider, the two square boxes on the bottom right corner). i have uninstalled and reinstall the modem driver but the problem still. however i observed the following: on the start/prog/starup-its has ADSL diagnostic tool. at msconfig, if i uncheck "the short cut ADSL ..." , click apply and restart the pc, it will become check again. i guess its bcos of the item in start/prog/startup. Can someone advise how do i solve the problem as its increasingly getting difficult to get the pc going and be able to go to internet. may be there are more reasons behind it but i am unable to tell as i do not know how to get the safe-mode step by step confirmation method. appreciate your help, tks |

Remove the ADSL item in c:\windows\start menu\programs\startup. It is probably only a LNK file. 2. You might as well uninstal the ADSL diagnostic tool; or if you have some reason to use it, check whether its own menu includes a tool or command "Run on reboot." may be there are more reasons behind it but i am unable to tell as i do not know how to get the safe-mode step by step confirmation method. appreciate your help, tks To get the startup options menu, reboot and hold down the CTRL key until the menu appears. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

prior to your response, in msonfig, i uncheck the bulk of NSW2004 files
leaving just the NPROTECT check and it can start ok and able to go internet. Now, have Remove the ADSL item in c:\windows\start menu\programs\startup.it also remove one of the two boxes ("the short cut ADSL ..." ) in the msconfig and also when i restart the pc, 2 boxes icon does not appear anymore at the bottom right corner. it ALSO start ok and able to go internet. after the removal, i updates the windows and surprising there are 2 critical updates as there was non the day before.. after that i check the remaining box (" the shortcut ADSL..") just to see (if the 2 boxes at the bottom rhcorner appears or not), surprising i cannot get the pc to desktop, it either restart or hang after loaded the NSW2004 i am quite sure that there is a conflict between the drivers of my modem and NSW2004 previously when i uninstall the old NORTON ANTI virus(no version as it comes with the pc, old one) and cos i did not uninstalled all the shared files as i am not sure who are sharing these files. inside my pc now is the NSY2004. as under the msconfig, there are many boxes associated with NSW2004/Anti virus, if i uninstall the NSW2004, all the boxes in the msconfig may not necessarily be gone. HOW can i make SURE that all these are gone when i un-install so that when i re-install the NSW2004, i know exactly what files/boees are associated with the NSW2004. the reason why i wish t to un-install and re-install NSW2004 is bcos i am not too sure if the pc is fully protected at startup. in the msconfig at the moment, there are check on Norton Auto-Protect (which i think its the old ANTI virus. c:\prog~1\NORTON~1\NAVAPW32.EXE/LOADQUIET) and NPROTECT (c:\prog\NSW\Norton Utilities\Nprotect.exe) hope you understand what i am saying and would be pleased to hear your ideas, many tks "Don Phillipson" wrote: "tim" wrote in message ... i have this problem, that the system always restart 3-4 tiemes after the modem icon appears.(according to my ISP provider, the two square boxes on the bottom right corner). i have uninstalled and reinstall the modem driver but the problem still. however i observed the following: on the start/prog/starup-its has ADSL diagnostic tool. at msconfig, if i uncheck "the short cut ADSL ..." , click apply and restart the pc, it will become check again. i guess its bcos of the item in start/prog/startup. [Remainder snipped] I do not remember your mentioning Norton earlier. Norton is another thread (an independent source of your troubles) because versions of Norton programmed since XP came on the market have been marketed for Win98, but simply do not cohabit amicably with Win98. Recommended: 1. Strip down your system to the essentials i.e. without diagnostic apps, antivirus apps, firewall etc. and confirm the system code and drivers are all OK. 2. List your other TSR desires in order of priority. E.g. I would say a firewall is high priority, a diagnostic app low. Then add these one by one, testing each for compatibility with your core system before the next step. 3. When you encounter problems as here with Norton, ask yourself whether it is worth the hassle. You may find a rival app that does the job better. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
