connect only to non-secure sites
When I start my computer (Win98SE), I can connect to both secure (https) and
non-secure (http) sites, but after a few minutes, only secure links will work. This problem occurred after I installed, then uninstalled a wireless networking device. The problem remains with an Ethernet cable attached from my network card to a router. |

The following file re-registers relevant processes and may repair this problem for you: http://aumha.org/downloads/https.zip -- Jim Eshelman, MS-MVP Windows/Security Windows Support Center: http://aumha.org/ AumHa Forums: http://aumha.net/ |

Thanks, I tried running the batch file, but unfortunately, the problem
returned after a re-boot. Any other suggestions? |

Does this mean that the problem was resolved for a time BEFORE the reboot, and then went away after the reboot? That might give us some approach to solving it. Are you running Microsoft's BETA antispyware program? This has been known to cause the problem you mention. (It's an unfinished, not-ready-for-primetime program, but many people are using it anyway.) That may keep it from coming back. It's possible there is a parasite (adware/spyware etc.) problem - you could try the cleaning steps on http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm and see what you find. You may want to try one of the Internet Explorer newsgroups for more direct attention to this - you can find them in this list of all MS public newsgroups: http://aumha.org/nntp.htm -- Jim Eshelman, MS-MVP Windows/Security Windows Support Center: http://aumha.org/ AumHa Forums: http://aumha.net/ |

Thanks . . . but the problem was resolved only temporarily, and only AFTER re-boot. Here's what appears to work (so far) based on a recommendation from the C/Net forums: I went into DOS, and renamed my Windows directory (as "Winold"). I did a clean installation of Windows in a new Windows directory. I can now stay connected with the clean Windows installation. Of course, my programs have to be re-installed (as I locate the disks), but it's a small price to pay. And if I really need them, I can run the programs by reverting to the "old" Windows. |
