Default FAT Error While Re-Installing Windows Me

I have a Dell Dimension P4 Desktop. I have had to
reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything once
before last summer. My computer crashed again last week
and when I went to reinstall Windows Me, Scandisk finds an
error on the FAT on my C drive. I tried reformatting my
hard drive, but it keeps telling me that there isn't
enough memory to and that the reformat failed. The
customer service center at Dell has been no help! Please,
can someone help me!

Try removing the existing partition(s) and then repartitioning using fdisk and
see if that allows you to format the disk. How large is the disk and what
version boot floppy are you using - is it a Win Me boot floppy or one from an
earlier version of Windows?

For details of how to fdisk and format see the Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 255867 - "How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition
or Repartition a Hard Disk" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255867) as
well as the file CLEANHD.TXT which is in the Win 9x folder on the Win Me CD (a
copy of which can also be found at KB271673 - "Windows Millennium Edition
Cleanhd.txt File Contents" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=271673).
