MBR virus??
I'm not certain this is the the right forum for this;if
not I'm sure some one will tell me,so here it goes. I've two machines one running Windows 98Se and the other has WindowsMe(both full retail versions with updates/service packs etc),is the one with winMe thats giving me the trouble,a couple of days ago I turned on the pc and saw the message "no boot record found, please insert system disk and press enter".So I inserted the startup disk and foremost among the messages was this"No valid FAT partition table found",some explanations were that either a virus has made my disk unrecognisable,or is not formated.I had uptodate antivirus software on both machines and I'm really weary of hooking the 98Se, to the winMe one to run a virus check for fear of infecting it as well(if indeed there's a virus). My questions are; A)is there a utility that will check the MBR for viruses? B)typing FDISK/MBR at c: prompt will rewrite the MBR,but will it remove the virus? erase my data? C)if I run setdebug and completely erase the MBR(write zeros to it)will obliderate it but, again, the question of my data, and the removal of the would be virus persists. I'm grasping at straws here folks, if anyone has a thought or a suggestion I'd really appreciated. Thanks in advance Jim S. |

MBR virus??
If you put in the command as you stated in your post, the syntax is
incorrect. Rebuild Master Boot Record: Bootup using your "Windows Startup Disk" Select #1 Exit Help At the DOS prompt, type the following line, and press enter FDISK /MBR (NOTE the space between the K and / ) Remove the floppy, and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot. This will rebuild your Master Boot Record (MBR). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ .........hope that was the problem! Heirloom, old and could be "Jim S." wrote in message ...
