WIN98SE SE SE SE SE sheeeesh
I've lurked this group for a very short while, and tonight I had a look
around for 30mins. I notice one thing that is as common as humans on the outside of this rock that floats in space, and it is the sheer amount of posters asking how to upgrade 98 to 98se. Is there some sort of diamond at the end of the rainbow once one updates? The info given by the "rons" and other gurus is always to put your hand in your back pocket or go to an auction site and etc etc etc. Why is this SE so special that you have to BE special in order to get a look in? What are these features that turn it into the OS of the future that everyone is looking for? Maybe the Group should be renamed: "pointer" as the most answers here point 98 se upgrade wannabes to the above. Anyhow, I'd still like to know exactly what one gets when upgrading 98 to 98se, so if any would like to answer it may save a lot of 'pointing', if you get my point. jeff |

There is not any diamond at the end of the rainbow once updated. There are
several improvements - Some are listed below. Having used and tried Microsoft systems like Dos, Win 3.1, win95, win98, win98SE, WinME, and WinXP, I would tend to say that the most stable and best of them are Win98SE and WinXP. Presently my preference is WinXP with Win98SE as a second choice. Win98SE is not special. It is just Microsoft stopped distributing win98SE quite awhile ago. Thus , it is becoming harder to find. You can find it in some retail stores (try www.pricewatch.com under operating systems) and the easiest place for to get a copy may be ebay. Win98SE comes in several flavors: 1. Full Retail version - The most expensive. Can be used for a clean install or for an upgrade from previous version of windows. 2. Retail upgrade Version - Can be used as an upgrade from a previous version of windows (3.1, Win95, win98). This version can be used for a clean install or an upgrade but requires proof of a qualifying product to install (win3.1, win95, win98) 3. OEM Version - This is effectively a full version but was designed for a clean install. In some cases it may be fooled and used as an upgrade. Ron Badour has some information here that may allow it to be used as an upgrade http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/upgrade.html 4. The Update Version - This was never sold in retail stores (Best of my knowledge) but was once available directly from Microsoft. It is available on Ebay This version can only be used to upgrade an existing win98 installation to win98SE. It will not allow a clean install or an upgrade from any previous version. Here is a list of updates that was provided by Mark Dormer. Has been updated for Y2K, USB and various other drivers. a.. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) a.. Device Bay Controller a.. DirectX Version 6.1 a.. Microsoft Connection Manager Version 1.2 a.. Microsoft Dial-Up Networking (DUN) Version 1.3 a.. Microsoft Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM98) a.. Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) a.. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 a.. Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.1 a.. Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA) a.. Microsoft NetMeeting Version 3.0 (build 4.4.3345) a.. Microsoft Wake-On-LAN a.. Microsoft Wallet Version 3.0 a.. Microsoft Windows Driver Model (WDM) Modem a.. Microsoft Windows Media Player Version 6.2 a.. Microsoft Year 2000 (Y2K) Updates a.. MSN, The Microsoft Network Version 5.0 Some of these updates may be had by just updating win98 but not all are available for win98. Some of the key reasons for upgrading have been ICS= Internet connection sharing Improved USB support = Several USB devices wants win98SE Several devices (newer Ones) may not have drivers for past operating system or they may not support earlier version . Typical items may be wireless, Cameras, camcorders and other devices. You will see win98SE as minimum requirements (win98 and previous versions of windows may not be supported). Overall for anyone having an older computer which may not run WinXP (hardware does not meet requirements) win98SE is an excellent choice if the hardware supports win98SE. -- Jon Hildrum DTS MVP www.hildrum.com "jeff" wrote in message ... Fair comment jon, thats the type of info I'm looking for.
Not sure if you can answer this, but who knows, you maybe. Seeing as its sunday night/monday morning here down under(oz), ( and I cant get any retail prices at the moment) what do you reckon the price of a 98se upgrade is ? I gather you are probably in the states but maybe you know the conversion rate, damned if i do, I dont have enough money in my account to even bother...(heh heh) jeff "Jon_Hildrum" wrote in message ... I do not know. It is hard to find the retail upgrade version of win98SE
these days. Mostly what you see is the OEM version. I would expect the price to be somewhere around $50-$60 both for the Retail upgrade version and the OEM version. However, the retail upgrade version maybe a bit more expensive if you can find it. -- Jon Hildrum DTS MVP www.hildrum.com "jeff" wrote in message ... You won't find a retail outlet withe W98se. You might find an old disk at
the Salvos or Vinnie's or a sunday stall, but usually without a COA or product key. Search on-line or at E-Bay or similar. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "jeff" wrote in message ...
