Default after fixing about:blank bug

I think I have fixed my IE from the about:blank problem. I
have been getting the OPWARE32 pop-up from Microsoft ...if
the problem persist contact ... I have also gotten
WUCRTUPD one too. Does anyone know what these two programs
do? Is there a quick fix?

I fixed about:blank with CWShredder and Ad-aWare 6.0

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...tasklist_o.htm

Opware16.exe and Opware32.exe (Caere OmniPage - ScanSoft)

These two background programs implement the OmniPage Aware feature
of OmniPage in specific versions of OmniPage
(this is called OCR Aware in other versions of OmniPage).

This feature inserts the Acquire Text option in the File menu
of Office Suites (Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite, Corel WordPerfect).

By clicking on "Acquire Text" you can scan a page of text and have it OCR'ed
by OmniPage straight into your wordprocessor, spreadsheet, or presentation,
all in one operation. When it works it is a great feature and a much simpler
operation than opening OmniPage, scanning, converting, and saving into a file.

Recommendation :

Unfortunately there are many documented conflicts between these background programs
and other applications such as applications using your modem (!!), or other applications
which need to use the scanner. Our recommendation, therefore, is that, unless you do
a lot of conversion-to-text scanning (OCR) and you are not experiencing general PC
problems or problems with other programs, then you should disable this feature
and get used to manually opening OmniPage to scan text.

You can disable the feature as follows :
(1) Open OmniPage.
(2) Choose the "Tools \ Options" menu option.
(3) Choose the "OCR Aware" tab.
(4) Remove the check mark against the "Enable OCR Aware" option.

& WUCRTUPD.

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...tasklist_w.htm

WUCrtUpd.exe (Microsoft) Windows Update Critical Update Notification.

This will appear in your Task List if you did a Windows Update at some stage
and installed the "Critical Update Notification" component. In some versions
this process is scheduled to run every 5 minutes and you cannot change the
schedule (under Windows 98 you can get round it with the "sucrtupd"
technique, but not under other versions of Windows).

Recommendation :

Do not walk, run to your "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel
and immediately de-install Microsoft Windows Critical Updates Notification.

The consequences of some Microsoft Critical Updates have been such that
the last thing you need is something to remind you, and therefore entice you
to update your Windows environment with the very latest bug fix
(which is what critical updates really are) from Microsoft.

It is not just that some of those updates have been quite simply disastrous
(remember May/June 2002 ?), it is also that too often for our liking,
the full consequences of installing some of those updates are not always
clearly spelt out by Microsoft. Yes, some of those updates are needed
from a security point of view, but in 98% of cases if you either run a good firewall
or your PC is configured securely, then you are protected anyway,
so do not fix what doesn't need fixing.

It is best that you simply do a Windows Update once every two or three months,
say, and only at times when you do not require your PC urgently
in the following 24 hours ! Finally, quite aside from the above,
WUCRTUPD is also sometimes responsible for illegal operations,
3-seconds mouse freezes, WULOADER error messages,
and Invalid Page Faults in KERNEL32.

Have we said enough ?

I don't know what they do? I get the box check
with the program admin if problem persist. My system seems

Post your HijackThis log to an appropriate forum. You may have fixed
"about:blank" temporarily but I think you have other hijackware interfering
with OPWARE32 and WUCRTUPD.

Thanks Hugh.

I removed the windows critical update notification. When
I went to Omni Pro I found that I did not have the Enable
OCR Aware tab checked. I checked it and rebooted to see if
that would make a difference. It did not. I still get the

You didn't state that you disabled it again. Did you?
You probably did, but if not, try that.

Otherwise, run MSCONFIG and disable it in STARTUP if you can.
If that works, you can either leave it that way, or edit the Registry
to delete the OPWARE32 trigger from the Run key, although I
am curious. You said
"I have been getting the OPWARE32 pop-up from Microsoft"

What exactly is happening, and when, and how often?

This feature inserts the Acquire Text option in the File

menu
of Office Suites (Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite,

Corel WordPerfect).

By clicking on "Acquire Text" you can scan a page of text

and have it OCR'ed
by OmniPage straight into your wordprocessor,

spreadsheet, or presentation,
all in one operation. When it works it is a great feature

and a much simpler
operation than opening OmniPage, scanning, converting,

and saving into a file.

Recommendation :

Unfortunately there are many documented conflicts between

these background programs
and other applications such as applications using your

modem (!!), or other applications
which need to use the scanner. Our recommendation,

therefore, is that, unless you do
a lot of conversion-to-text scanning (OCR) and you are

not experiencing general PC
problems or problems with other programs, then you should

disable this feature
and get used to manually opening OmniPage to scan text.

You can disable the feature as follows :
(1) Open OmniPage.
(2) Choose the "Tools \ Options" menu option.
(3) Choose the "OCR Aware" tab.
(4) Remove the check mark against the "Enable OCR Aware"

option.

tm

WUCrtUpd.exe (Microsoft) Windows Update Critical Update

Notification.

This will appear in your Task List if you did a Windows

Update at some stage
and installed the "Critical Update Notification"

component. In some versions
this process is scheduled to run every 5 minutes and you

cannot change the
schedule (under Windows 98 you can get round it with

the "sucrtupd"
technique, but not under other versions of Windows).

Recommendation :

Do not walk, run to your "Add/Remove Programs" icon in

the Control Panel
and immediately de-install Microsoft Windows Critical

Updates Notification.

The consequences of some Microsoft Critical Updates have

been such that
the last thing you need is something to remind you, and

therefore entice you
to update your Windows environment with the very latest

bug fix
(which is what critical updates really are) from

Microsoft.

It is not just that some of those updates have been quite

simply disastrous
(remember May/June 2002 ?), it is also that too often for

our liking,
the full consequences of installing some of those updates

are not always
clearly spelt out by Microsoft. Yes, some of those

updates are needed
from a security point of view, but in 98% of cases if you

either run a good firewall
or your PC is configured securely, then you are protected

anyway,
so do not fix what doesn't need fixing.

It is best that you simply do a Windows Update once every

two or three months,
say, and only at times when you do not require your PC

urgently
in the following 24 hours ! Finally, quite aside from the

above,
WUCRTUPD is also sometimes responsible for illegal

operations,
3-seconds mouse freezes, WULOADER error messages,
and Invalid Page Faults in KERNEL32.

Have we said enough ?

I don't know what they do? I get the box check
with the program admin if problem persist. My system

seems
to be running OK.

Check your system for "hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing

else
running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware,

Spybot,
etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even
they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis

is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and
remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert
analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools

may
be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger
(http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden

Files

002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode

001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds

anything,
create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup More options Delete
all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

I think I have fixed my IE from the about:blank
problem. I
have been getting the OPWARE32 pop-up from
Microsoft ...if
the problem persist contact ... I have also gotten
WUCRTUPD one too. Does anyone know what these two
programs
do? Is there a quick fix?

I fixed about:blank with CWShredder and Ad-aWare 6.0

OPWARE32 caused an invalid page fault in
module HLPB.DLL at 018f:2ae66adb.

WUCRTUPD caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 018f:bff7b9a6.
