Default UNABLE TO VIEW PICTURES

THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS WITH MY COMPUTER. FIRSTLY WHEN YOU
USUALLY HIGHLIGHT A PICTURE IN A FOLDER A LITTLE THUMBNAIL
OF IT APPEARS ON THE LEFT. FOR SOME REASON THIS DOESN'T
HAPPEN ANYMORE AND NOW I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHICH PICTURE IS
WHICH. IS THERE A WAY TO GET IT BACK AGAIN? ANOTHER
PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE SOME PICTURES I CAN'T VIEW ON
THE NET. INSTEAD OF SHOWING THE PICTURE IT HAS A LITTLE
WHITE BOX WITH A RED CROSS INSIDE IT. DO I HAVE TO
DOWNLOAD SOMETHING TO VIEW THIS? CAN SOMEONE HELP ME
PLEASE?

For "As WEB Page" & Thumbnail View...

(1) Are you in "My Computer, View Menu, As WEB Page" view?
(2) I have read installing IrfanView will upset it. Have you done so?
(3) There is this fix...
http://www.dougknox.com/utility/scripts_desc/fixpix.htm
Repair Image Preview and Thumbnail View in Windows Explorer
....However, I do not know of the implications it may have to IrfanView.

For just Thumbnail View...

(1) You turned it on, by R-Clk any folder in Explorer, Properties,
"Enable thumbnail view". Then, you R-Clkd the R-Pane, View, & selected
"Thumbnail"?

(2) There is a repair for it at...
http://aumha.org/regfiles.htm
& here it is...

http://aumha.org/downloads/thumnail.zip
This is the general fix to restore Windows Explorer’s thumbnail preview
capability for a dozen different image types. Based on the original work
of Alex Nichol, Doug Knox & other MS-MVPs.
WARNING: Do not use in Win XP.

Glee, have you ever read that Irfanview can cause this problem, perhaps
by stealing associations? Will Knox's fix cause a problem in Irfanview?

I never read that....have you?
I don't use Irfan View to take any file associations, but rather use the SendTo menu
item to send image files or folders to Irfan. You might try experimenting and
see....I don't have a system I want to jerk around at the moment, or I would test
it.

I never took Irfanview. I can't recall it all that well, but I came out
of one thread here thinking Irfanview did muss WEB View, Image Preview.
Perhaps it hadn't been installed well. Anyhow, I only state it a
possibility.
