Be sure your motherboard supports that much memory and it's flavour.

For memory supported by Windows 98 look he

There is no known instance of Windows 98 every being used successfully
on a PC with 2 gb of RAM installed unless the MaxPhysPage parameter is
used in System.ini to limit Windows 98 to 1.5 gb or less.

If you have more than one operating system installed on the PC and
need to have 2 gb (or more) of RAM installed for the other operating
system(s) then you need to add the following line to the [386enh]
section of the system.ini file for Windows 98:

MaxPhysPage=60000

which will prevent Windows 98 from using more than 1.5 gb of the
installed RAM. Note that you may have to reduce this value, as some
machines do not operate with more than 1 gb of RAM with Windows 98.
The setting would then be:

MaxPhysPage=40000

And if Windows 98 is the only operating system installed on this
computer then you should reduce the installed RAM to only 1 gb. That
is almost always more than Windows 98 will ever need, unless you are
running some very specialized memory intensive applications.

Good luck

Default win98 2gb ram install

Hi Ron,

I triple-boot a computer into Windows 98 SE, Windows ME and Windows XP
Home Edition Service Pack 2 on FAT32 File System in a Compaq Presario 5714
computer, then I gutted it. I moved all the Drives out and moved them into a
new Case with a new Motherboard, Processor and 2 GB of Ram.

I reformatted and reinstall all operating systems, sucessfully. I have
no problems with Windows XP Home Edition SP 2 or Windows ME. However, with
Windows 98 SE, while I was able to install the system and have it work to a
degree, I found I was unable to access Windows 98 SE, Safe Mode with 2 GB
installed and getting the Graphics to work The mouse pointer was messed up.
It look like a Box.

No problems with Windows ME, as long as I limit the Ram Memory Windows
ME sees to 512 MB. Safe Mode works with Windows ME, but not Windows 98 SE.

Suggestions?

Why Windows 98 SE? Because QuikSync3 works fine with Network Magic
installed in that operating system, but can't get QuikSync 3 to work with
Network Magic installed in Windows ME.

This is the value of multiple booting the computer. You get to see what
works and what doesn't, using the same piece of equipment.

Why using multiple operating systems? Programs no longer being supported
for use in newer operating systems. Programs no longer being updated, that
one likes.

What value do you have for MaxPhysPage in the [386enh] section of the
system.ini file for Windows 98?

Have you checked with the new motherboard manufacturer's web site for
any updated drivers for Windows 98? Also for any tech support notes
regarding Windows 98 on that particular motherboard model?

Sometimes old technology and new technology just won't mix.

Have you considered using VirtualPC and running Windows 98 that way?

Good luck
