Default can't browse or get email

I am really confused. I have a laptop running Windows
ME. Everytime I try to open Internet Explorer or Outlook,
an error comes up and I am unable to connect. I am
however able to browse the local network. I should
clarify a few things. I get errors when I try to use a
local/internal IP, but it does work when I use external
IPs (outside the firewall). I beleieve it has something
to do with DNS. As soon as I put the local IP for the DNS
server I get the errors. If I leave out the DNS, I can't
browse, but I also don't get the error.
I have tried this with a wireless NIC as well as the built
in NIC, the problem occurs with both.

Please help

What do you mean by "local IP"? AFAIK, your LAN connected computer needs the
IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers; or some other DNS server with
Internet routing information. Unless that "local IP" is a DNS server which
checks external DNS, it isn't going to have DNS information the browser and
mail client need to find remote hosts.
