Windows Media Player 9 series ver. 9.00.00.3075 does not recognise the video
file with extensions .BUP .IFO and .VOB
or even the video disc in the drive.
It is fully upgraded from update site.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

Have you installed codecs to allow you to play DVDs? WMP comes with no such
codecs.

In essence WMP just provides a front end for playing DVDs with the actual
decoding done either by a hardware decoder (nowadays I think relatively rare)
or using codecs installed as part of some other application. The reason being
that the MPEG2 codecs are licensed and cost money. In my case I have
Cyberlink's PowerDVD installed (supplied with my DVD player) (others use
WinDVD) and following the installation of PowerDVD WMP is then also able to
play DVDs.

You may be able to find using Google a free mpeg2 codec you can download.

AAH,

Ah, so returning to your original post, are you saying that despite having
WinDVD installed WMP9 cannot play DVDs or that opening the file types you
mention (IFO, BUP, and VOB with WMP nothing plays. I don't think that this is
anything to be concerned about, WMP only seems to be able to play on a right
click open the VOB movie files but not either IFO (Index?) files or their BUP
backups. Can you play a DVD using WMP when placed in your DVD player?

I'm not really clear why you are asking about this. Is it that you have
copied a DVD to disk and are trying to use WMP to play it? If so then I
suspect you've hit one of the limitations of WMP and should stick to WinDVD
for this purpose.

Sorry not to be able to help you here.

IIRC, WMP6.4 as supplied was able to play DVDs using the MPEG-2 codec
supplied by another DVD player installation... then they turned that
feature off in 7.1, but I think 9 has it back again.

Rick
who has 3 different commercial DVD players and wouldn't dream of using
WMP to play one anyways.

Mike
I have WinDVD working fine the DVD movie disk in DVD writer drive E: WMP
does not recognise the same original(not copy) disk, the
answer it gives back is "no disk in drive E:"
Double click on IFO,BUP and VOB just
hangs it for a while and nothing happens.
Error: Window media player cannot find the
specific file.
------------------------------------------------------
Apart from this I tried VLC and Media Classic freewares, these two also did
work ok
for playing the movie disc.
From the codecs point of view, I have running
Easy Cd creator 5, Burn4free, Cd burnerXP Professional, and Complete Cd
Maker Delux, all freewares do accept the normal
DVD data 4.7 GB disks
The problem is only with the WMP. I am not
very desprate for WMP but as it is there it should work or should not be
there.

Do you think reinstall will put it right since i do not want to mess with
os.
This may have caused by the Security Cd setup.
Can the reinstall be done from the Security cd which has a setup file?

Forget about double clicking on IFO, BUP or VOB files, that's not the way to
play a DVD, at least when using WMP as your player. The clue has to be WMP
reporting "no disk in E". If it can't read or see the disk then that's the
problem.

Is this a bought DVD or one you have made yourself? If a DVD you have made
yourself, what happens if you try to play a commercial DVD with WMP?
