Restore/Norton Error

I reset windows to an earlier state to fix a problem but
forgot to stop Norton AV from running on startup and now
the Help Menu, System Restore, Contol Panel, My Network
Places, and various other windows and applications will
not open, display, and run correctly.
Dell tech has decided that a reformat is the only
solution. I don't want to, yet.
Is there any way, short of tracking down each system
malfunction and manually fixing them, to fix the ME
operating system?

Have you tried undoing the Restore operation?
Have you tried uninstalling NAV?
Try "SCANREG /FIX" from Start|Run (or a DOS boot from floppy) - Windows
will reboot

Yes I have tried those. Nada.
I forgot to mention that the machine will not respond to
keyboard input during startup; it only responds
with "keyboard error" or tries to start normally.

One other thing: As I stated, System Restore does not
display or run properly, so undoing a previous restore is
not an option.

If scanreg /fix doesn't help then - as a last resort - you *may* get away
with a scanreg /restore. It *might* just pull you out of the mire - at least
sufficiently to let you get the keyboard back.

Failing that - and maybe not quite so drastic as a format - you could try a
re-install.

The thing that worries me is the 'keyboard error' at startup - it may simply
be that the system is responding normally because bhaviland is pressing the
'wrong' keys at the wrong time - or it could indicate a more serious
hardware fault.

bhaviland - what keys are you pressing at startup when you get the error?? -
the system is designed to respond only to a limited number of keys - usually
only DEL, ESC, F1,F5,F8 will produce anything other than a keyboard error.

Yes Noel, I did wonder about that myself but 'assumed' it to be 'post BIOS'
i.e. during the loading of the WinMe drivers (including the keyboard) with a
sufficiently damaged/corrupted registry that couldn't be 'Fixed'
