Default DPMS mode??

Dear Computer Geniuses,
I got a used computer from the school and we had to pick any monitor
any cpu any keyboard we wanted and when i hooked every thing up it says dpms
mode is off. I double checked it several times and i got tried and mad and
just gave up. Can u please tell me what is wrong with my computer.P.S I got
it working 1 time but when it was almost to the desktop it froze on me.
