Default Temp Directory No Longer Being Used

All of a sudden, all of my temp files have been placed in the root
windows directory. I never had a variable setting in autoexec to begin
with and before a couple days ago, all print spools, installs etc that
used the temp directory got deposited in windows\temp. Now they are
going helter skelter into \windows.

I've researched this and cannot find anything in the registry that
points to \windows...and in fact all temp notations point to
\windows\temp. But they are NOT being placed there. If I add the set
set temps etc lines in the autoexec, all works fine.

However, being the curious soul, I am wondering what happened - and if
I can get things back to normal without having to use an autoexec.bat
file.

Thanks

Hi Bernie,

1. Create a folder named TEMP on the partition or drive
where you want to TEMP files to be stored.
2. Click Start, click Run, type "sysedit" (without quotation marks)
in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. On the Window menu, click Autoexec.bat.
4. Add these two lines to the Autoexec.bat file to read as follows:
SET TEMP=C:\Windows\TEMP
SET TMP=C:\Windows\TEMP
5. Open the registry editor to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\
VolumeCaches\Temporary Files. In the right pane is a value called
Folder.
Right-click it, select Modify and enter the new path for the Temp
folder.
6. On the File menu, click Exit.
7. Click Yes when you are prompted to save the Autoexec.bat file.
8. Restart the computer.

Default Temp Directory No Longer Being Used

Bert,

Thanks for the help. What I do not understand is the fact that last
week I had the registry setting exactly like you say, and NO
autoexec.bat set temp commands. With that in mind, why did Win98 cease
placing tmp files in the temp directory??

I have done what you say and yes it now works - but to me the problem
is what happened that initiated this such that I now have to include
the autoexec set command? It's one thing to correct a problem, it's
another to understand it - I HAVE corrected it but still do not
understand what happened.

Any further insight is appreciated!!

I don't know why normal Temp files would be routed to the
Windows folder. By chance did the temp files begin with fff?

Bert, nope, and even the temp install directories that get created
normally in the temp directory were placed in the Win98 root
directory.

Also, at my machine at work, which has basically the same setup as the
one at home does NOT have the SET command in the autoexec file but
DOES place all temp files normally in the windows\temp directory.

Pretty weird if u ask me!!

Still wondering thought, what is up.
