Default Win-98 file-find - what is it, or where does it live?

On XP, the "Search for files or folders" function from the start menu
simply invokes another instance of explorer.exe.

But the Find - files or folders function on win-98 does not seem to be
linked to or a part of explorer.exe.

On win-98, when you invoke or run explorer, you will note there is no
file "search" or "find" option to be found (at least I don't see it).
On XP, explorer does have a search button.

While running CCtask, I don't see any new process pop up, nor any new
module being loaded by any currently-running process, when I invoke
Find-Files or Folders on win-98.

Hence my question - is there a separate .exe or .dll that contains the
file-find application, or is it an intrinsic part of one of the system
files (kernel, etc) ???

I'd really like to "graft" win-98's file-find into XP (or find a third
party substitute that acts identically) but such an animal doesn't seem
to exist. I despise XP's file-find mechanism, even when configured in
it's most basic or "classic" operating mode.

Anyone know offhand how win-2k's file-find looks? Is it also just an
instance of explorer.exe? Does it behave more like win-98's file-find?
If so, can it be "grafted" into XP?

Why bother with seriously-flawed "file mangers/file finders" ?

I never ever use WE, and file find EXTREMELY rarely.

Get a real file manager with 2 panes, super-find, custom multi-
rename, FTP, branch view, and dozens of other features built in
and forget about the limitations of Windows "utilities". I use
Total Commander. Free Commander is prettier but has almost the
same features I believe, and is free, for the more frugal folks.

I allways thought that the Find files window was part of the same
thing that draw the taskbar and start menu in Windows98?

About that btw, why the heck isn't the "program" Systray's
functionality included in that? if you kill the Systray process
then the clock and its little systray area is still painted
but without the volume control in it (but still icons from
other programs). Is "systray" the volume control application?

hehe.. you are right! :-D
I have never seen that it is missing though, since I allways
press F3 to search for files when in an file manager window
(and yes it is logically wrong key since F3 should mean
"find next" but MS tend to not do things consistently....)

Now when I try to find a search command in the file manager windows
I do stumble upon View/Explorer field/Search though - but that isn't
for file search I believe, it is for web search with microsofts
newly renamed MSN search... some controls and MSN's new name
(so it must have contacted internet allready there to know it!)
appears in area to the left in the window.... together with and
error/crash dialogbox about "Automation server can't create object" :-/

I haven't played with these kind of things, but thought about it...
where can I find CCtask to try and how do I use it?

It must be hidden in a dll somewhere as it does not show up as a
process while looking at 2 different process managers.

Not sure if this is helpful to you or not. It's a registry hack to
change the XP
Find style back to the 2K Find style:

I don't know whether it acts "identically", IMO it is far
superior, but Total Commander's "find" function is something you
might like to try. Not to mention its other features which would
make MS **** their pants. WE is a laugh. It was only good for
setting file associations but I have recently found several
programs that do it far better and faster.

Trying to fix a retarded MS "design" is pointless, it may
succeed - but at a price. You fix one thing ands it ****s up
another. It's not even worth discussing.

I use NO software of theirs except the OS. There are better and
usually free alternatives for ALL of MS's "programs" - most of
the good parts of which were stolen from other authors.
