Default Random Restarts With Old Dell

My friend has an older Dell Dimension v433c with 64MB and an ATI Rage
Pro AGP2X video card.

The computer was working perfectly, until my friend decided to upgrade
her AOL 4.0a to AOL 9.0 and add some antivirus protection. So I
installed AOL 9.0 and AVG antivirus and ever since then the computer
had problems booting up.

The computer restarts (at random) right after the AVG dos virus checker

runs, the screens stays black for a long time then restarts. After such

a restart the computer goes into safe mode. The strange thing is that
while in safe mode Win98 gives a warning the the video card settings
are incorrect and we have to choose 16 colors and 640x480. Well after
another reboot the computer will most of the time boot up correctly
except that when it does, win98 will warn us that the vido adapter
settings are incorrect and we can only choose 16 colors and 640x480.

I have tried nearly everything, I have checked IRQ settings, checked
BIOS settings for PNP, and IRQ. Also I have disabled any legacy support

for sound cards, in addition I ran registry mechanic to repair any
registry damage. The problem remains

Any ideas??

Thank you

The first thing to try is upgrading the video drivers with the latest ones from
ATI per their instructions. You can get them he

or if the link breaks:

or start here by clicking Drivers and Software at the top of page:
