moving data between PCs
I have 2 identical PCs and a monitor with a button that switches
between the two. I would like to pass daata between the two with a serial port without addind hardware. Is that capability built in? I have an old procomm that I have not used in years but would like to investigate other options. win98se |

If it is a one time thing I would, temporarily, install one PC's hard drive in the other as a slave and copy what I needed. If it is an ongoing process and, especially if it is bi-directional, I would go to the trouble of installing NICs and set up a 2 PC network. As a last resort You could use the "Direct Cable Connection" function described he http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305621 HTH & GL John -- \\\||/// ------------------o000----(o)(o)----000o---------------- ----------------------------()-------------------------- '' Madness takes its toll - Please have exact change. I used to use 2 /different/ machines with a KVM all the time (I haven't turned the old one on for months, but it still works beautifully - 12 years old, 95B :-) and only had USB on the newer machine (I yet have to plug anything into it), so I used to burn CD-RW's and copy stuff that way - or floppies if there was little data, splitting a 3.5 MB file between 3 disks is the worst case I remember. The serial port would work although possibly only in DOS, but even if you found a Win program, it would still be way too slow for a permanent solution. Plus a bit of a hassle messing around with the software. Total Commander has a "PORT connection to other PC" function, which, judging by the rest of that INVALUABLE program should work pretty well, but I have never tried it. He talks about it he http://www.ghisler.com/efaqport.htm -- Lots of theoretical butchers are alleged and other bloody eyes are suitable, but will Pam secure that? |

There is a description of the procedure he
http://www.home-network-help.com/crossover.html It may involve adding hardware if one or both of those machines is not already have a NIC. This is the simplest way for each machine to get direct access to the other's hard disk drives. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Fan924" wrote in message ...
