From post by ojn at Techuy's 31July2009. Checked for real.

Avast has added the following notice without much announcement.

See: http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requ...vast-home.html :

"Note: The operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until
the end of 2009."

Yes, it has been announced that Avast will drop such support.

I have posted previously for Win98 users to keep an eye on Clam Win.

It does have win98 support...but the present (development) version does not have
"real time" scanning. It's possible they will add "real time" scanning in the
future...so for a free AV program I'd say Clam Win is worth looking into.

Well, I hope they also work on improving their detection rates, as 54% is not very
good:

Well it's the only free AV for win9x I know of that will have support in
the immediate future...
part of the reason I no longer use Windows anymore is the whole business
of virus detection hassles

Hi Philo:

See my 6/7/09 post in the thread "free Antivirus for Windows 98SE?" for info
about the freeware Rising Anti-Virus at http://www.freerav.com/ .

However, to save you the look-up, the essance of my post us that while it
still claims to support Win 98/ME, it has very poor test scores.

Cheers,
Jerry

But I presume it does better on Mars where it seems to have come from!

A little off topic, but How do you manually update Norton 2002?

I can install an old version that I bought.

I've never had Norton. Others around here may know. Otherwise...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
Google has over 3 million mentionings of it.

http://www.computing.net/answers/win...ate/32419.html
Tom's Guide seems to discuss it.
