There's no need to use system restore Mart.
It really is a trivial fix to add back the deleted values from the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up\VarLDID key. This problem has been round since almost day one. -- Mike Mart wrote: *Maybe!!* If you only ran the registry cleaner (as Mike M suspected) quite recently AND the problem has occured subsequently, then you should be in with a chance. Run System Restore and roll-back to the latest time BEFORE running the reg.cleaner. Hopefully that will restore your settings |

Cheers Mike, I was about to reply with a note to QV to suggest that he
follow your lead, but I was a bit busy elsewhere, sending you an email regarding another topic g Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... There's no need to use system restore Mart. Ok, I tried the system restore...did not work, tried the reg fix...did not work. Now I'm lost as to what this one means, please help. My system restore only went back to the beginning of Aug 2004. I couldn't get previous months. Thanks guys. -----Original Message----- There's no need to use system restore Mart. I've just put together a new box with an AMD 64 and am busy transferring approaching 150GB of files across the LAN from this box to the new one. Then I'll be pulling this box to pieces and trying to work out why one of the hard disks is so slow and causing massive cpu usage and the occasional lock up. It's not an OS problem (clean XP SP2 install) and almost certainly involves either the hard disk (one of two is very slow, unfortunately that containing the OS) or its controller (HighPoint embedded on the motherboard). sending you an email regarding another topic g LOL Catch you later when we've both got a bit more time. -- Mike |

Do you mean that System Restore didn't do a restore, or that it did do a
restore but didn't fix the problem? (The same question applies to Mikes reg fix!) ..... My system restore only went back to the beginning of Aug 2004. Just when did you 'clean' the registry? And what else have you cleaned out?? To go back more than a couple of days or so with SR is more likely to give more problems than it resolves. If you did this some time ago and more worryingly, wiped potentially more important stuff from your registry, then all bets are off. For the time being, you had better restore your restore point, although I wonder whether you are now beyond recovery. I doubt whether an 'over-install' will fix this and wonder whether a clean install is your only real option. Others may have different ideas here. Mart "qvltaurus" wrote in message ...
