Default Scanreg/fix stalls on System.dat

My system.dat had grown to over 9 Meg. and when I tried scanreg/fix it
stalled at System.dat showing 0 to 1%. I have cleaned up my registry so
that system.dat is at 7.4 Meg yet scanreg/fix stalls at 0 - 1%. If you
exceed 8 Meg or so is it broken permanently? HOw can I get Scanreg/fix to
work again.

I am running on Windows98 second edition.

TIA

Don't know about the permanently broken part, for your sake I hope
not but do remember such an incident here. I probably 'fixed' it
with yet another install of Windows as I was apt to do back in
those days when I thought it was a fun thing to do.

Do a google search for regcompact, PC world was my first hit for
this very good program that I also used quite a bit back in day.
It may be able to tackle that monster sized registry file and
trim the fat way back to a normal 4 meg or so.

It worked! Thanks for the response. I'd just about given up checking
my post. I downloaded regcompact. It took my registry down to 7.2 meg
from about 7.8 meg for a 5% rection. There still has to be dead wood in
there from seven years of being a pseudo power user. Most importantly
when I went to DOS, typed in Scanreg/fix, the yellow bar on System.dat
started to move, very very slowly, but it completed. I had never seen
it move that slow before this condition set in. But all appears to be
normal now. Thanks again. Encourged by this success I installed and
ran regcompact on my XP machine. There were two segments that were
going to achieve over 80% reduction in size! don't know XP don't want
to know, but it surprised me.
