If you uninstall it then you will have no operating system and the machine
will be unusable. Is that what you are trying to achieve? Why do you think
you need to uninstall it?

Permanent un-install involves a good swift re-BOOT; preferably with steel
toe jobbers (color doesn't matter). ;-D

Actually Jeff Richards asked a good and valid question. So you must ask that
of yourself, and reply back with the *details*.

But could it be this easy? I don't know.

The easiest way I have found is useing "BootIT NG"
It's a partitioning program. Download it in to a folder on
your system and unzip it to a Floppy. Once it is on a
floppy. Boot the system to the floppy. It will ask if you
want to install "BootIt". Answer cancel to the first popup
and OK to enter partition work. It is wise to read the
help files.
Now Click on Partition Work icon. Highlight the partition
that has XP on it. Click on properties on the lower right
side. In the properties popup click the window that gives
the dropdown list of "File System" Types. Select
"11/BH:FAT-32" and OK. I think it will ask if you want to
format. Do so or select format from the right menu if it
does'nt. This will wipe the XP off the HD and set the
format to Fat32 for the Win98SE.
This will give you a completely wiped HD. Once you exit
out of BootIt and restart computer. You will need the OS
install disk in the CDrom.
If you are reinstalling XP it will ask if you want to set
the format back to NTFS.
You really didn't say what you were planning on doing
after the HD clean.
I am assuming that you want to install an OS that does
not recognize NTFS.
If it is just to clean the drive to sell or give away?
Then just exit BootIt after cleaning and shut the PC down.
The HD will be clear and ready to load an OS.

Tried using KB 303661 -- did not work! My uninstaller WINXP Home Edition
file name is Windows XP Unstaller vice Uninstall Windows XP. Have I got the
wrong uninstaller? The ONLY reason I want to uninstall WINXP is to recover
my WINME Outlook Express emails (which I [oops] did not export/backup before
installing WINXP). I can find no reference to possible recovery of the
emails. I have not tried using osuninst.exe, but will do so if I can recover
the emails. If no email recovery is possible, I plan to use the osuninst.exe
and try recovery or format my hard disk as I plan to install WINXP
Professional

You should ask about recovering your e-mails in an OE newsgroup, and ask
about upgrading from XP Home to XP Professional in an XP newsgroup. The two
issues are not related - if the old OE email file exists it makes no
difference whether you recover it while running XP or ME.

Thanks Jeff for your comments. I tried using osuninst.exe to no avail. Is
there a third choice in unintalling WINXP? The backup files seem to be in
place, but the uninstall program either cannot find them, corrupted, not all
there, etc. Do you have another method besides KB 303661 and osuninst.exe?

Found the answer to missing OE emails so I won't have to uninstall WinXP
(which I cannot do anyway without reformatting my hard drive). Please refer
to MS KB 303055.
