CD ROM not accessible
(cross-posting to unrelated groups reduced)
Does it give this error no matter what disc you try in the drive? Have you tried an audio CD in the drive....will it play? Boot up with a startup floppy disk with CD-ROM support, note the drive letter it assigns to the CD drive, and try doing a DIR reading on a CD from DOS. Post back with the results. If you can read a disc from the floppy boot, restart in Safe Mode, open Device Manager, and remove ALL entries under the CDROM category, click OK all the way out, and restart in normal mode to let Windows redetect the drive. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "p.mc" wrote in message ... Hi Just installed Win98se on a friends machine, I've been using the CD ROM drive to install drivers etc, but all of a sudden the drive gives a message: "D:\ is not accessable. The device is not ready" So I can't carry on with the upgrade. I get no probs in device manager, plus the only info on the drive is that it's 54X, no model or make info, and the driver is installed off the Win98se disc. -- Regards p.mc |

That proves the CD-ROM is physically OK. So, as Glee also suggested...
(1) Boot to Safe Mode. (Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that.) (2) "START button, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab". (3) Open the CD-ROM branch, by clicking it's plus sign. (4) Highlight each drive in that branch, & click "Remove". (Safe Mode may reveal the presence of a "ghost".) (5) Close up, & boot to Normal Mode. Alright, apparently you wer able to get a directory reading (DIR) on a CD from the DOS boot, and you got an audio CD to play once but not again.
