Default Dat files change date and time

Multiple dat files (ie:system.dat & user.dat)change during
the operation of any application. It has been my
experience that these dat files will change date and time
when the computer is booted, but not during use. Could
someone tell me if this is normal, or is something else
going on here? No viruses or spyware...

As these files are open and in use whenever Windows is
running the date and time properties are arbitrary and
could changes at any time.

The time stamp for user.dat is immediately updated when I open a
document file. System.dat is unaffected.

If I use regedit.exe to edit the registry, then the time stamp for
system.dat is updated, but user.dat is unaffected.

the answer is simple, some of the registry resides in user.dat and some of it
in system.dat

both files don't need to be updated on every minor change

best regards,
