Column width problem with 'Details' view of 'Save as' and 'Open' dialoges
In the 'Details' view of the 'Save as' and the 'Open' dialoges, when the
'Desktop' special folder is selected, the width of every column, if adjusted, won't stick the next time when those two dialoges show. There is no problem with any other folder. And no problem with the 'Desktop' special folder in Windows Explorer, either. How can the column width in question be retained? Please help. Actually, I'm wondering if there is a Registry item that controls those column widths. |

I doubt it. If there is such a Registry key & you did put values in it,
they still wouldn't stick, anyhow, I think. BUT, you may hold CTLR & click the plus sign on the numeric keypad for a pretty good result, if you've lost a column or they are too wide. They all will show up & perfectly sized in most circumstances. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "David" wrote in message ... | In the 'Details' view of the 'Save as' and the 'Open' dialoges, when the | 'Desktop' special folder is selected, the width of every column, if | adjusted, won't stick the next time when those two dialoges show. | | There is no problem with any other folder. Column width problem with 'Details' view of 'Save as' and 'Open' dialoges
CTRL + keypad plus sign is really convenient for resizing the column
widths perfectly in the 'Save as' and the Open dialogues. But the new widths still won't stick when the two dialoges are called again after exit. PCR wrote: I doubt it. Actually, I'm wondering if there is a Registry item that controls those column widths. If you, like me, want a larger 'Open|Save as' dialog box where the initial default view is 'details' you may want to check out '[Windows] MultiEnhancer' by ElmüSoft http://www.netcult.ch/elmue/ElmueSoft-en.htm someways down the page. What isn't clear to me from the web-page is that you can install each of the three modifications individually, but that you can. I don't use Outlook Express, and i don't explicitly use 'Internet Explorer' so i have only installed the patch for the 'Open' DialogBox. With the MultiEnhancer installer/configurator you can do the patch, restore the original and switch back and forth. --- Don't know why you have a problem in that one folder or what /could/ cause it, but i would probably check if there is a hidden [Desktop.ini] file in what for most people is "C:\Windows\Desktop\" If the computer has several user-accounts also check their /Desktop/ -folders. To see hidden files you must turn that option on in windows. If such a file is found rename it, so you can restore it if you want. Then reboot and see if things have changed. (I have no [Desktop.ini] files on my Win98 except the one in the 'Fonts' folder and the ones in 'Temporary Internet Folder' and its subfolders.) I'd probably then delete these two (Registry Editor, be very careful) registry-keys, to make Windows forget all Explorers window-settings. "HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\StreamMRU" "HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Streams" Then reboot and see if things have changed. -- "Open the door, Homer, i've heard it said before but i ain't gonna hear it said no more."
