Default Win98SE on Toshiba Satellite Pro 410CDT

Has anyone managed to get Windows 98SE working smoothly on a Toshiba
Satellite Pro 410CDT notebook PC?
I formatted the HDD and did a clean install of Windows 98SE and installed
the updates from the Microsoft website. I have three problems.
1. Windows shuts down correctly if I've only used it for a short time
but if Windows has been running for a couple of hours shutdown hangs
displaying the "Windows is shutting down" screen. Hardware reset doesn't
cause Scandisc to run.
2. If the PC is left running overnight it hangs completely and will not
ctrl-alt-del reset. It requires a hardware reset and the following boot up
always runs Scandisc which takes about 20 minutes to complete.
3. If I run TreeCardGames 123FreeSolitaire, after 15 minutes or so I
receive a Windows error message to the effect that the sound system is not
responding correctly. After accepting the error message there is no sound
from any program but everything else appears to still work as normal.

SOFTWA
Win98SE 4.10.2222A, IE 5.5SP2, Zonealarm free v2.6.88 & AVG7 free v7.0.298.
No problems are detected by Ad-Aware or Spybot. This software combination
runs smoothly on a newer Toshiba Tecra 8000.

ALREADY TRIED:
Followed suggestions in Windows 98 & 98SE shutdown troubleshooters,
specifically:
Upgraded PC BIOS to latest version (v5.06).
Tried the original display, sound and network card drivers installed from
the Win98SE CD.
Tried the latest display driver (v4.1.4.2 downloaded from Toshiba), sound
driver (ESS v1087 AudioDrive for Windows 95/98/98E downloaded from ESS
Technology) and network card driver (3Com Megahertz 10Mbps LAN PC Card
driver v5.7 downloaded from 3Com).
Tried with the network card removed.
Tried with and without the Windows fast shutdown patch.
Tried with BIOS features CPU Sleep Mode, Display Auto Off and HDD Auto Off
enabled and disabled.
Unable to disable Windows Advanced Power Management support in Device
Manager, System Devices as suggested in the Windows 98 Shutdown
Troubleshooter - on clicking OK/Apply the PC hangs and needs a hardware
reset.
Reinstalled Win98SE twice onto reformatted HDD.
Note that no Toshiba hardware utilities are installed as the Toshiba website
states that the "standard" Toshiba utilities are not Win 98 compatible and I
could not find any utilities listed for Win98. The only requirement that
the Toshiba website listed for running Win98 was to remove the Windows 95
hardware utilities and to update the display driver.

I've run out of ideas and reverted back to Win95B for now. Does anyone know
the answer to this problem or is the Toshiba Satellite Pro 410CDT simply not
compatible with Win98SE?

Since your computer runs correctly for the first few minutes that it's up,
it's unlikely that your problem is with Windows and more likely that this is
a hardware problem.

It sounds like it might be heat related since it only happens after the
system has been up for a while.

If the problem were with the Windows installation, it would not work
correctly for a short time before the problems occur.

Thanks for the feedback Patty. I've temporarily reverted back to Win95B and
the PC runs without any problems. It never hangs when shutting down and
will run happily for several days continuously. I can't think of any reason
why it should run hotter using Win98SE.

I would be happy to stick with Win95B but now many programs require Win98 or
later.

As the same "software bundle" runs OK using Win98SE on a Toshiba Tecra 8000
notebook I'm quite prepared to believe that the Satellite Pro problems are
hardware related - possibly one or more of the hardware drivers isn't fully
compatible with Win98SE. However I've installed the latest drivers that I
could find. I was hoping that someone else had experienced and solved these
problems with a Toshiba Satellite Pro 410CDT or a similar 1996 vintage
Toshiba notebook PC.
