Large Data Transfer from Win98
Any advice on the best way to transfer large volumes of data from an old
Win98 PC to separate new hardware running XP Home? Neither have a network card and don't I really want to take either apart. I realise that reduces the options but I am thinking whether there are any utilities that will allow connection via the parallel ports? With suitable leads of course! I am not familiar with the PC's in question but I understand that the Win98 PC is not seeing a USB memory stick. Thanks for any suggestions. Bill. |

30-days shareware Total Commander, www.ghisler.com , has this ability.
And not a bad Help. 1.5 MB to download. Not a fast operation though... If I recall correct, even diskettes (ca.1 MB/min) are faster. -- Mikhail Zhilin http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. I mean parallel port here.
And to add -- most of USB sticks have Win98 drivers: either on the CD which came with them, or on the manufacturers' sites. -- Mikhail Zhilin http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. Many thanks. Bill |

The W98 machine won't see the USB memory stick unless drivers are installed
for it, and very few memory sticks have any drivers for W98 available. You might find a few available if it's W98se, but even that's unlikely. Laplink has a variety of products that will do the job. USB should be OK, provided the problem with the W98 machine is with the memory stick and not USB. Otherwise, parallel is probably fastest. I am not familiar with the PC's in question but I understand that the Win98 PC is not seeing a USB memory stick. Thanks for any suggestions. Bill. The best way is to physically move one hard drive to the other PC. IF, if, IF the other PC recognizes the hard drive in the same CHS and land zone parameters, the file system etc. will be intact for copying the files. If the hard drive is connected to an add-on ide card with its own bios, moving the card and the hard drive will assure proper recognition of the filesystem. If not, the next best method is DVDR in ISO 9660 format. Next is CDR/CDRW in same format. Next lower and more troublesome method is an external USB2 and/or Firewire hard drive, and must work in both OSes. USB 1.0 and 1.1 are deathly slow for large data volume copying but may work okay. Next lower and more troublesome method is a USB2 memory stick, hopefully one with substantial capacity. Again, must work in both OS environments. Next, network card connection. Though not physically difficult to install, XP to 98 LAN connections can be troublesome to setup at the very least for sharing. This is almost as fast as hard drive to hard drive if using a current LAN card and proper cabling. The silly-nilly method is recommended for the faint of heart. This is called the direct cable connection. XP and 98/98SE have details on how that's done. Its deathly slow, but gets the job done. Finally, DO NOT USE WINDOWS 98/98SE backup and expect it to restore with XP backup program. IT DOES NOT WORK!!! This is any medium of any form including hard disk, DVD, CD, and other removable media. A word of advice, always maintain two kinds of backup. One for quick restoration of the said PC, and the other in suitable format for moving/reading/copying that data to another PC, preferrably a fast data medium. "Sh__ happens". My 2 cents. |
