Default hd swap

i have data on a hd that i cant access without doing a new
hd setup that destroys all data.

what are my options for getting this data off somehow?
even if it is a hard way?

i was "thinking" about putting the HD in an exteral HD
case, (is this recommended?) and using USB 2 or firewire
elsewhere to get it all off.

i am using win98...what if i put the HD in a PC with XP
will XP be any better at using the HD that 98?

If the hard drive (one) is functional, you can put it in a PC case with
another drive (two) that has Windows installed on it. You can then use
Windows Explorer to retrieve the data from drive one.

If drive one is not functioning, you might have to use retrieval software to
retrieve the data to drive two:

IRecover, $50 to $100, The demo version gives an indication of what
information can be recovered from your hard disk but data is not recovered.
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/~tkuur...x.htm#irecover If your data is
valuable, the author of the software provides tech support should you run
into problems.

Recover4All, $49, demo will retrieve files up to 10 kb and show what else
can be retrieved. Retrieved files are copied to another drive:

Restoration, Freeware, not tried:

In either case, you will have to set the jumper switches properly and make
sure the drives are detected in the BIOS.

Why can't you access the data?
