Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads
I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE &
ME. However, I have a ton of learning CDs for my 3-year-old and they are Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 only (some of them). So, I need to be able to get the patches/updates for Win95-WinMe somehow. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Brian -- Brian Millikan Computer/Software Engineer Microsoft Control Applications (Dialog-Based) Specialist / Hardware Driver Development / User-Level Hardware Device Interfaces |

You can still download patches and updates for Win 98/98SE and Win Me from
the Windows Update site (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) or if you wish to download and burn copies to a CD for later use rather than install use the Windows Update Catalogue (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp) although the latter must be accessed from a PC running a Win 9x operating system - later operating systems are now redirected to the v7 Catalogue site that has no Win 9x content. -- Mike Maltby BMillikan wrote: I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE & ME. You only need them if you will be connecting to the Internet and using MS Internet Explorer/Outlook Express. Don't. It's asking for trouble. Use Opera 7.23 from www.oldversion.com Now, don't get all ruffled up, but WHY in the world is a "Computer/Software Engineer, Microsoft Control Applications (Dialog-Based) Specialist etc." asking this basic-as-can-get question? -- Needless to say, I disdain such idiocies as Xmas and New Year's, but I'd thought I'd play along just once... thanatoid's New Year's Resolutions. 01. It's simply that MS is no longer writing new updates The BEST place to get them with ANY browser - as the web was intended to work in the first pace - is: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html You can then examine them without going through the pages and pages of MS explanations and decide if you REALLY need any of them. -- Needless to say, I disdain such idiocies as Xmas and New Year's, but I'd thought I'd play along just once... thanatoid's New Year's Resolutions. 01. Windows 9x/98SE, Me Updates/Patches/Downloads
Well, my future plan is to connec that compute to my domain and give it
limited access to the internet. But, there are no such plans right now. Despite all the bad stuff out there on the i-net, there are some good sites for preschoolers (especially playhouse Disney's web site). Why am I asking? Because I'd like a fully patched/updated/upgraded Win95/Win98/Win98SE/WinMe collections of CDs for the future because I also have an (almost) 1-year-old that will be using the same software and it is only for Windows 3.1 or Window 95 (some of them). The "emulation mode" in XP and Vista have only been successful in some applications. But, not for games like that. So, I have to revert back to Win98 (at this point). -- Brian Millikan Computer/Software Engineer Microsoft Control Applications (Dialog-Based) Specialist / Hardware Driver Development / User-Level Hardware Device Interfaces "thanatoid" wrote: =?Utf-8?B?Qk1pbGxpa2Fu?= wrote in : I know Microsoft has removed the online support for Windows 95, 98, 98SE & ME. If I were you I'd just go to some garage sales or eBay and get a $20 486 or PI for him/her, WITHOUT a modem, although it'd probably be at least 2 years before s/he could figure out what do with the modem... I don't let ANYONE touch my computers, let alone a 1-year old kid. Cat hair in the keyboard is about all I am willing to put with :-) -- Needless to say, I disdain such idiocies as Xmas and New Year's, but I'd thought I'd play along just once... thanatoid's New Year's Resolutions. 01. That's what I thought, but why is it that MS is always releasing "Security Updates" and Netscape, Firefox, Opera, etc. never do. At most they release a "new version" every once in a while. Is that where they include security changes, or do they just have fewer vulnerabilities than MS products. Don't. It's asking for trouble. Use Opera 7.23 from www.oldversion.com I have firefox 2, but I suppose you think I should try this too, right? If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-) |

Now there seem to be 2 meanings to the word support. If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-) |
