Screen fonts are thick and choppy
Hi all, I just got a DELL Inspiron 3000 (oldie but goodie) with a Pentium II at 233MHz and a display panel of 800x600. I upgraded to Win 98SE, but the fonts on the screen don't look right. Within a word, some letters are thicker than others, using more pixels in their width while other seems slender, using less pixels horizontally. The "thick" letters look choppy. This seems to happen arbitrarily, since an "n" in one word is thick while another "n" elsewhere is just right. Display properties indicates: Laptop Display Panel (800x600) on NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD It is at true color (24 bit) (also tried it at Hi Color 16 bit) Screen area is set at highest possible, 800x600 Any ideas on how to get the fonts to look better? Any recommendations are welcomed :-) Saga |

If you see any, look on line for newer drivers for these components. 2 / start / run / SFC.EXE = System File Checker. You can set it to check c:\windows\fonts\*.* All SFC does is compare selected Wiindows files (your selection) with a list built when you installed. Because you upgraded recently, go carefully. Write down the names of any font files reported faulty, and save copies elsewhere, in case you prefer the old ones. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Check the maker's web site for an updated video driver.

Screen fonts are thick and choppy
First off, thank to all who replied, your help is much appreciated. Here is what happened... I selected the standard theme desktop, no change I then went into device manager and checked for any yellow exclamation points - all seemed to be well there :-) I them ran SFC - setupx.dll was corrupted. Although I did not think that had any relation to my display problem I restored it. I ran SFC a second time and all was well. I then went to Dell's web site and searched for drivers. I did find one for the adapter that was released about a year after the one that was currently installed. After some challenges, I managed to install the driver, rebooted, but still no change. I wondered if I missed something so I went to Google (again) and did a search with the phrase: dell inspiron 3000 user guide Going down the list of results I see this brief semi description of a result that mentioned the Inspiron 3000's features: model 233XT, 48MB RAM, 3GB HD XGA TFT 13" 1024x768 display, etc... Wait a second! My display definitely said that it was 800x600! Could it be that the adapter's driver was fine, but the display had been incorrectly displayed? I went back to the display settings, advanced button and changed the LCD panel from 800x600 to 1024x768 and then upped the resolution accordingly... lo and behold! a gorgeous display!!! No more thick fonts!!! Again, thanks to all! Saga "Saga" wrote in message ... Hi all, I just got a DELL Inspiron 3000 (oldie but goodie) with a Pentium II at 233MHz and a display panel of 800x600.
