Windows 98se hangs on black screen during shutdown
The subject pretty much says it all, but this only happens when the computer
has been on for a few hours; if power it off after just a half hour, or hour, it doesn't hang. None of my devices conflict with each other. I do see an update available for download.....a supplemental shutdown update, but it's from 1999? Also, in the instructions to uninstall it, it makes reference to a file that does not exist. Since this alters system files, I don't like doing something like this, unless there's a way to reverse the changes. That's the only problem I have; I don't have any reboot problems. I guess I could end task out of everything except explorer and systray, but that's kind of a hassle and surely that shouldn't be necessary each time. Other than installing a 5 year old "update", which may or may not work, any other ideas? Of course, when I restart the next time, it goes through Scandisk, for which I let it, so it can correct any possible errors on the drive. |

There are many good articles out there which cover many of the things that can cause shutdown issues like you are describing. Here's a very good website to read up on all the things that you can check to isolate the problem and be able to resolve it. http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm Rick |
