Linksys wireless router / network configuration problem
Hello,
I just bought a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G), and a PCMCIA card (Linksys WPC54G) my Dell Inspiron 5000 is having trouble connecting to the internet (I have a Zyxel ADSL modem). I have one (Windows XP) pc connected succesfully to the router and modem, so I'm fairly confident the router+modem are correctly configured. How do I tell windows ME which network connection to use to connect to the internet? When I try to acces an internet URL from my browser there is no connection, but I don't get a useful error message. I checked the "Never dial a connection" box in the connections settings, but I still get no internet connection. The Linksys monitor application tells me I am connected to the wireless network, but that no internet connection was found, but I can't log onto the web configurator of my router, which seems to indicate that something is quite wrong in the network setup. Curiously, I *can* connect to my modem web configurator, so something is working. I remember seeing a "Relayed Gateway" icon appear in my "Network places", but it has disappeared again. If I sound confused, it's because I am. What kind of sense does it make that I can connect to my modem via my router but not to the router itself? The router and the modem are both reachable from the other pc... I suspect that my network adapter is working, but that something in my network settings is wrong. Any input much appreciated. Is the Windows XP connected to the Zyxel? I don't have a complete picture of your connection. I don't know which model of the Zyxel you have, so I can't figure out what the problem might be. I can guess, but do you wish to proceed on possibly incorrect guesses? -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

Thanks a lot for your reply, I've been trying out various
things, and have gotten the connection working with a wire... Which is good, but ideal would be to connect without the wire. :-) I tried to include all the necessary information in my original post, thanks for pointing out the missing bits - here they a The Zyxel is a P623-ME, which is plugged into the "Internet" port of my router... Does that answer the bridge/router question? The curious thing is that everything works fine when I plug in the network cable, it's only via wireless PCMCIA card that the problem exists... When I log onto windows ME, it asks me for a password, and I have gotten into the habit of just hitting escape. Could this be why the "Home Network" cannot access anything? This feels like a really stupid question, but I must admit I have been hitting escape for so long that I no longer remember the password - when you aren't connecting to a network, logging in doesn't bring you anything. I guess I could create a new user and see if logging in properly gets me anywhere? I just added a NSLU2 to the network, but seeing as the "Home Network" is not working, connecting to it is not possible. Needless to say, my girlfriend's Windows XP pc has all of this working without any trouble... Should I just give in and hand over the dosh for a new PC? I am reluctant, seeing as my current PC meets my computational needs perfectly... Thanks a bunch for your time, it is much appreciated. If you ever come to Geneva, beer's on me. :-) Morten -----Original Message----- On Mon, 2 May 2005 05:02:17 -0700, Morten Lauritsen wrote: I just bought a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G), and a PCMCIA card (Linksys WPC54G) my Dell Inspiron 5000 is having trouble connecting to the internet (I have a Zyxel ADSL modem).
