copying files from win98SE to win2000
Hi. Long time, no see. I hope you can help me or refer me.
How does one copy files from win98 to win2000? What do people usually do? (I know that he will have to install most of the programs for them to work on the new box, but right now, just copying the files over is the issue.) 1) His win98SE has no CD-writer, but he copied a few files with a USB memory stick. 2) He could use a null modem? I knew how to do this in DOS iirc, but I don't know how to address a serial port in windows. Is there a way? Or do I just go to native dos? I have software for this, I forget what it is called, maybe from DOS before win3.1. Do I need software, or can I just say Xcopy or XXCOPY C:\*.* Com1 ? I know XXCOPY has a lot of switches 3) He could install the win98 hard drive as the second hard drive in the win2000 computer, which sounds the easiest except for file format. I thought that iirc file formats that win98 uses aren't used by win2000. Is there some way to convert formats while copying? Is this necessary. He says he copied a few files already and some of them worked, according to him. Background: I guess I should know some of this, but none of it will lift its head off the pillow. A young friend was having trouble accomplishing something with his win98 machine and a grown friend of ours gave him a spare computer that runs win2000. He's trying to get his old programs runing. If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-) |

... How does one copy files from win98 to win2000? 1. Create a network linking the Win98 to the Win2K PC. 2. Put both the Win98 FAT32 drive and the Win2K NTFS drive into any PC with an OS capable of reading both drive formats (e.g. WinXP, Linux) and copy over. 3. Write to any medium both PCs can read/write (e.g. external USB drive, email etc.) -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

The W98 partition will be FAT16 or FAT32 - probably FAT32. Windows 2000
can understand both these formats. So you can put the W98 drive in the W2000 machine and copy the files off without problem. The file format does not need converting. You can transfer files using a USB ramstick, provided that both systems can access the device. You could use a null modem cable, and software such as Laplink. You could network the two machines. This can be done using the network cable equivalent of the null modem cable, so you don't need a router or switch. You will need a network adapter in each machine, and the right sort of cable. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "mm" wrote in message ... Hi. Long time, no see. You can transfer files using a USB ramstick, provided that both systems can access the device. You could use a null modem cable, and software such as Laplink. I have a Laplink imitator, and a cable, somewhere, but can't find it and the first idea seems easier. Thanks to both of you. You could network the two machines.
