Default Windows Protection Error

I am having a problem with a system that i have installed Windows 98 SE on.
Every other time it boots it gives the message
"Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer"
on a solid black screen with no other messages.
The other times it boots into the desktop just fine.

Going into "msconfig" and enabling the startup menu is the only way I
have been
able to get the system to boot to the desktop everytime. This method
will not
be a workable solution in the long term because I need it to be able to
boot
unattended.

During one of the times when I knew it would give me the error on
booting, I held
down the "ctrl" key to bring up the boot menu but the system errored out
before
the boot menu showed up.

I have tried the "Normal setup", the "Diagnostic setup" and all of the
different
file configurations under the "Selective startup" with no changes. I am
not sure
what else to try or even the best troubleshooting method to use from here.

Please help

Mike

Default Windows Protection Error

That's one of the tough ones, with horrible MS articles to look at. Here they are...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q149962
How to Troubleshoot Windows Protection Error Messages

http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/winproer.htm
Henri Leboeuf's "protection" articles.

Here are two I get at
http://search.support.microsoft.com/...SD=GN&LN=EN-US MSKB
Search "configmg"; Windows 98; Exact Phrase; Full Text.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...12&Product=w98
Err Msg: While Initializing Device CONFIGMG: Windows...
(187612) - When your computer restarts after you run Windows 98 Setup,
you may see the following error message: While Initializing device
CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...66&Product=w98
Error Message: Initializing Device IOS Windows Protection Error
(263466) - When you start your computer, you may receive the following
error message: Initializing Device IOS: Windows Protection Error When
you try to restart your computer in Safe mode, you may receive the same
error message.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
