recover files that were deleted accidently
this is my problem. hope somebody can give a solution for
it. this is a windows 98SE loaded on a P4 machine. everything was running fine until i needed to update the driver of the ethernet card. the system asked me to load windows 98SE CD to extract some files. i know that i have to cancel and not to go further with the process since i did not have the cd ready that time, instead of cancelling i continued and i SKIPPED some files that were needed by the system. ( i clicked on skip button 3 times). when i boot the system and before the windows screen appears the computer stops and notify me that some files are missing and i need to reinstall them. those are three files. this is the story and now the question. how can i recover those files? i have the cd (98SE) with me now. what shall i do. please advise. sorry to bother with a boring story. i thought to tell it may better describe the problem for you. |

appreciate your help.
will try it. but let me see if i understood, here are what i am going to do step by step - write down the name of the missing files. - once windows is fully loaded, i load w98SE cd in cd-rom - on the run command i type SFC. - type the name of the files with their file extension each file alone. - repeat the process until having the three missed files. ? once i have the files extracted where do i have to load them? which directory? ? how do i load them? (copy and paste?) Appreciate your advise towards rectifying the sequencial steps and your reply regarding the new questions. -----Original Message----- start run sfc Extract one file from installation disk, type in filename do that 3 times for 3 files do NOT use the other function of SFC 'scan for altered files' DOES NOT WORK, it searches for files different to its database, not wrong files. if you have ever installed any software, been to windows update, or even just changed system settings, using this option will fubar your pc fubar -- f- up beyond all recognition -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools (1) http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Catalog of removal tools (2) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/n.../collateral.as px?CID=40387 Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters _ "sarah" wrote in message ... | this is my problem. hope somebody can give a solution for | it. | this is a windows 98SE loaded on a P4 machine. everything | was running fine until i needed to update the driver of | the ethernet card. the system asked me to load windows | 98SE CD to extract some files. i know that i have to | cancel and not to go further with the process since i did | not have the cd ready that time, instead of cancelling i | continued and i SKIPPED some files that were needed by | the system. Hi, Other ways to solve it besides as suggested by AlmostBob are going to Device Manger, then the Network Adapters category and find the NIC listed there. Highlight it, select properties, then the driver tab and update the drivers that way or just remove it instead from the Device Manager, then reboot and allow Windows to reinstall it. Also, for future reference, it is possible that you have the needed files on your hard drive already. PC makers often put the needed ".cab" files in a folder at C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or maybe even C:\Cabs. Search for them, you're looking for a bunch of them like Win98_39.cab; just use StartFind File or Folders and enter *.cab in the field and search your hard drive(s). If not, take the time now to copy them over from the CD to a folder on your hard drive so that the next time an installation prompts you to insert the Win98 CD, you can just point to the folders with the .cab files in them. (Click OK when prompted for the CD, you should get a message like "couldn't find the files", click browse and point to the folder with the .cab files.) MM |

Go to devicemanager, delete the ethernetcard, and reboot. Windows will reinstall everything. |

with uninstalling the device driver and letting the computer detect it again to load the driver and reconfigure it. this has happened, the devoce is detected, driver loaded and configured. but the file are still missing .everytime windows starts, i am still asked for those missing files and i have to push enter 3 times to bypass the POST and allow windows to start and load. -----Original Message----- sarah wrote: this is my problem. hope somebody can give a solution for it. this is a windows 98SE loaded on a P4 machine. everything was running fine until i needed to update the driver of the ethernet card. the system asked me to load windows 98SE CD to extract some files. i know that i have to cancel and not to go further with the process since i did not have the cd ready that time, instead of cancelling i continued and i SKIPPED some files that were needed by the system. First:
Click Start Run, type in: msconfig and press Enter. Under the General tab click the Advanced button. Click next to "Enable startup menu" in the check box to select it. Click Apply Ok, do not reboot yet when asked. Second: Click Start Settings Control Panel Network. Remove any Modems/NICS/Ethernet devices listed under Components. Click Ok and reboot to Safe Mode. On reboot you will get the Startup Menu, select Safe Mode and press Enter. Once in Safe Mode: Right click MyComputer. Click Properties Device Manager tab. Click the + next to Network/Ethernet adapters to expand. Remove ALL devices listed for the Network/Ethernet adapters. Close out and reboot. Windows will redetect/reinstall the device. If it asks for the Win CD, put it in the drive tray, click the browse button and navigate to the Win98 Folder and select it as where to look for the files. If you still have problems see: Error Message: Cannot Find a Device File That May Be Needed to Run Windows http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q132008 Err Msg: Cannot Find a Device File That May Be Needed to Run... http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q166832 "Unable to Load the Dynamic Link Library" Error Message When You Install Drivers or Utilities http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q302590 -- Brian A.
