Where are the desktop icon settings stored in 98se?
Windows 98se
I have a lot of icons on my desktop. Every once and awhile they get all jumbled up, and it takes me nearly an hour to straighten them up. I have a specific order I have them so I can find them quickly. I have never figured how they get messed up and probably never will.... What file and where is the setting for the icons? What I want to do is just backup that file so I can replace it when the desktop gets messed up. There is supposedly some setting to lock the desktop, but I have never found it, and if it does exist, I'd still like to backup whatever file has the icon settings, just in case! |

That data is stored in the registry as encoded information, you can try to save System.dat and user.dat which are the registry files and attempt to reapply them in DOS mode, but changes done since the last save for the rest of the machine means you might have some programs installed anymore. A better solution was recently discussed just a few post back. If you can't see it here is the link that provides a fix issued for NT4 but works well for 98 too. http://stevehealy.org/techblog/?p=162 |

More recent ones include iconoid and DesktopOK, but I'm not sure those work in '9x. -- J. P. Gilliver. Since this icon messup just happens instanntly, I can restore the reg. a lot faster than I can rearrange all the icons. That way there is little chance of anything getting messed up unless I just installed some program that day. I turn the computer off every night, so any changes would just be a one day event. Yes, i have copied the reg files too, and restored them from DOS. That also works. I am reading that weblink right now (above). It looks like that is more for XP and Win7, but I have not yet read all of it.. Thanks |

Using my Win98 with firefox 3.x on dialup, It took a half hour to load, gave me a security error and when I finally got to the page, there was no download link to click on. (It's a cnet page). http://www.midiox.com/ But they did list the above webpage, which is the author's site. I clicked on it, it loaded in seconds and clicking on "Desktop Restore" took me right to the downloads. There are 6 versions of it. The bottom one is for Win98. The others are for XP up to Win10. Some are 64 bit. Dont waste your time with cnet, and the extreme amount of ads they bloat you with. Go directly to the site I posted. -- Now that I got the file, I'll try it. But have not done so yet. |

But have not done so yet. The one I recommended - sorry, I hadn't realised there's an actual desk called EZDesk, so the software is harder to find. I found a copy at http://www.5star-shareware.com/Windo...es/ezdesk.html (don't worry about mention of $15: the trial version works for ever; I actually decided I wanted to pay for it a few years ago as I'd used it far longer than I should have, but all the real links have gone). And it does work on 98 - even 95. Unfortunately the download is gone too. The page is there at the link you posted, but clicking on the download button brings up another page, then there is an error saying the download is not there. Do you have the original install file? If you do, is there some place on the web you can stick it for downloading? Like a personal website or something. It's a very small file. 83kb. |

Where are the desktop icon settings stored in 98se?
Hello anonymous,
What file and where is the setting for the icons? Although its not directly talking about Win98, I don't think it could hurt to take a peek he https://superuser.com/questions/6258...sitions#630734 , in particular the registry path: They are located in the registry under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Deskt op. The key that should interest you is the ItemPosXXXxXXX (where XXX is your resolution). (HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER) If its there you could save the whole "desktop" subtree, but also just one-or-more of those "ItemPosXXXxXXX" keys. Regards, Rudy Wieser |
