Default CD ROM not accessible

Have had this problem on my Frankenstien.
Reload the sound drivers and any updates.
Go to Start/Run type "Qfecheck" with out quotes. See if there are any alert
tags.
Another time my wife tried to install a Math. learning program. The system
needed WMP9 to run the program. She uninstalled it and the CD rom would not
work after. But a reboot solved it.

Hi

Just installed Win98se on a friends machine, I've been using the CD ROM
drive to install drivers etc, but all of a sudden the drive gives a message:
"D:\ is not accessable. The device is not ready" So I can't carry on with
the upgrade.

I get no probs in device manager, plus the only info on the drive is that
it's 54X, no model or make info, and the driver is installed off the Win98se
disc.
